Out of the Blue

I'm declaring operation upgrade a success, though it's not as straightforward as that. First off, the hardware part was pretty easy. Swapping my Corsair RM1000X PSU for the RM1200X went smoothly. Each being fully modular helped, and I did not even laze-out and reuse any of the cables. I did forget one SATA power connection for a set of case fans, but that was an easy fix. The cabling under my case backplate isn't as neat as before, but it's not bad, and no one can see it. I installed the RTX 4090 and for some reason it required two attempts to install updated graphics drivers and an extra couple of reboots to come back as expected, but after those oddities it was fine. As I previously noted, I thought it was only a remote chance that the graphics card swap would clear up my Diablo IV crashing, but as I went through the process I became more and more enamored of the idea that the problem might be solved by the PSU replacement. After all, my other symptoms are these occasional odd USB and sound resets, which could be from power dropouts. But that pet theory died quickly, as it did not take long to recreate my crash. Now this is the point where I must confess that despite complaining about it more than once, I had not taken this too seriously before. The other glitches aside, the only crashes were in Diablo, and I thought it might be a game bug. I embarked on this hardware path because I had intended to upgrade my graphics card anyway, and it wouldn't hurt if that fixed the problem. So I finally started in on more hardcore troubleshooting. After running some diagnostics a memory hardware error popped up. This was a surprising development, but a welcome one, since it was so tangible. I swapped the RAM sticks to reseat them, and this time they passed the test. By then it was pretty late, so I have not yet had the chance to see if this clears up those crashes, but I'm pretty optimistic. I'm also happy to know I can pass along my old hardware with a clear conscience that I'm not saddling someone with broken stuff.
