Out of the Blue

I'm declaring operation upgrade a success, though it's not as straightforward as that. First off, the hardware part was pretty easy. Swapping my Corsair RM1000X PSU for the RM1200X went smoothly. Each being fully modular helped, and I did not even laze-out and reuse any of the cables. I did forget one SATA power connection for a set of case fans, but that was an easy fix. The cabling under my case backplate isn't as neat as before, but it's not bad, and no one can see it. I installed the RTX 4090 and for some reason it required two attempts to install updated graphics drivers and an extra couple of reboots to come back as expected, but after those oddities it was fine. As I previously noted, I thought it was only a remote chance that the graphics card swap would clear up my Diablo IV crashing, but as I went through the process I became more and more enamored of the idea that the problem might be solved by the PSU replacement. After all, my other symptoms are these occasional odd USB and sound resets, which could be from power dropouts. But that pet theory died quickly, as it did not take long to recreate my crash. Now this is the point where I must confess that despite complaining about it more than once, I had not taken this too seriously before. The other glitches aside, the only crashes were in Diablo, and I thought it might be a game bug. I embarked on this hardware path because I had intended to upgrade my graphics card anyway, and it wouldn't hurt if that fixed the problem. So I finally started in on more hardcore troubleshooting. After running some diagnostics a memory hardware error popped up. This was a surprising development, but a welcome one, since it was so tangible. I swapped the RAM sticks to reseat them, and this time they passed the test. By then it was pretty late, so I have not yet had the chance to see if this clears up those crashes, but I'm pretty optimistic. I'm also happy to know I can pass along my old hardware with a clear conscience that I'm not saddling someone with broken stuff.

Ok, reminds me of an outhouse joke (Rodney Dangerfield joke, if I recall):

Two guys enter a two-seat outhouse. One guy finishes first, and as he pulls up his pants, some change falls out of his pocket down the hole. After staring down the hole a long time, he takes out a $50 bill, and throws it down the hole after the change. The other guy, still on his seat, looks at him in amazement and asks him why the hell he did that. First guy answers: "Well, you don't think I'm going down there for just 50 cents, do you?"

{rimshot!}

F-35 Crash:

In another article I read, a Marine spokesperson said that the F-35 (and presumably other fighters?) have a feature that wipes all radios (channels used and encryption keys) and navigation maps when the pilot ejects, to prevent that information from falling into enemy hands. I would presume that includes the Transponder, which may explain why they couldn't track it. The transponder on a military plane can be turned off during combat, but it would normally be on when flying a training mission like this.

Memory:
Coincidently, I have a friend's PC on my bench. It was prone to BSODing with various errors. It BSOD'd on me a dozen times in the past few days, but never while running and always on boot (although he says it sometimes happened to him while running).

In the end I found several issues, but nothing solved the BSOD problem until I slightly underclocked his RAM. Now it's rock stable. DDR3, four sticks, and the stick pairs aren't matched. Curiously, before I underclocked it, it still consistently passed MEMTEST86, several times. My Spidey sense kept telling me it was RAM, but the failure of MEMTEST86 to find anything was perplexing. But AIDA64 did fail once which made me start thinking about RAM again.

It's an old 8th gen Core i7. It also had intermittent USB issues which I think was a combination of having BIOS configured for Legacy USB, which Win10 doesn't seem to like, and possibly corrupt USB drivers, which I force reinstalled. CPU was also getting hot (but only under an extreme load like AIDA64, and it would throttle properly at 90C) due to a broken HSF mount (those old, crappy Intel coolers with plastic pins - I had a better HSF in the junk bin) and dried up thermal paste. But none of that was causing the BSODs, apparently. I think it's just getting old, and it's hardly worth looking for replacement RAM for it. He's not a gamer.

I have now rebooted it 50 times or so, and run AIDA64 for 24 hours without a problem.

Rather nice upgrade on your PC, hope you cleared up the crashes. I just upgraded mine to a lesser extent last month, but with a much more limited budget, I could not swap out my Nvidia 960 yet, but it still plays the games I play in 2k. I will probably go the AMD route though when I do replace it.

I was browsing Steam this morning and I noticed the new Mortal Combat was priced at $70? That takes a lot of egotism to price it at that level since its scope is pathetic compared to other games at that price. Heck, there are tons of games priced less that have tons more content. I am amazed that foolish people pay that much for it.

Speaking of hardware failures.

I just discovered that an EVGA 850GQ power supply in one of my whitebox servers has had a bad 5V rail out of the box. Up until today, it was an NVMe based compute box so I never plugged anything in to the SATA power connectors. Today I tried adding six SSDs to it for a new ZFS pool and the system would power on for half a second and turn off. Breadboarded the whole machine and then slowly started adding components back to it to discover the culprit. Swapped cables since the PSU is modular, no dice. Tried a completely different power supply, system booted right up.

Called EVGA and they set up an advanced replacement with zero hassle. It was a pleasant experience outside of having a bad 5V rail.

I've been through a couple sets of RAM over the past decade. Some may recall my discussing it here. One set was under warranty so replaced for free. That's basically the only major issue I have had.

I kept the potentially offending RAM, and more or less in the same slots. I swapped them for each other. Maybe because I've never had bad memory plagues, but my first thought is that reseating it could help, and it seems to have. I'll test it further as I go along, but I didn't want to leave a brand-new 4090 stress testing unattended overnight for some reason. Flamethrower

Yup. You'd think he was a mac user or something. Just joking around, Stephen! 😁 Look on the bright side, there's nothing wrong with a graphics upgrade in general!
Haha. Well as I say, an upgrade was planned already. Doing it amid this problem was admittedly a lazy way to see if that would fix things, which matches how I had been dealing with this up to now. As I say, I was definitely thrown by how this didn't show up in other games, leading me to underestimate the problem.
