Into the Black

Last Link of the Day: Wes Anderson Talks About Roald Dahl’s ‘The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar’, Teases His Next Movie, And Claims: “I Don’t Have An Aesthetic.” Doesn't have an aesthetic? It seems what he doesn't have is a lot of self-awareness.

Having watched Asteroid City and The Life Aquatic, I'm fine with skipping any future Wes Anderson movies. They're not bad, his style just isn't for me.

I think Meteor City just dropped into the acceptable price range for a rental on Amazon, $5.99, so I'm running out of excuses to avoid it.
I quite like most of his films, but Meteor City jumped the pastel shark for me. The story is buried under too many layers of self indulgent crap.

So, he has no concept or appreciation of beauty or what is in good taste? I'm guessing he either doesn't know the meaning of the word or he is failing to properly communicate his actual thought...

I haven't seen much of him, so I can't really comment.

I agree, Prez, and Wes has an overwhelmingly distinct aesthetic and style, haha

'Aesthetic' and 'style' are different terms when it comes to filmmaking. 'Style' is a far broader term and encompasses 'aesthetic' as well several other key identifiable ways of doing things.

A clear example of this is the movie '300', based on the classic comic "The 300 Spartans". The aesthetic was largely lifted from the comic, adapted for the movie, and is very distinct. The style is clearly Zak Snyder, and though the aesthetic is often different his style similarly shows through in his other cinematic works. For better or for worse, depending on one's opinion.

"And claims: I don't have an aesthetic."

look. As much as people aren't a fan of the AI art thing... If you tossed in 'Wes Anderson does {X}", where as that could be most other 'well-known' film properties... you're gonna get something has a very distinct style... otherwise known as an aesthetic. Based all on his own works. Best one was the 'Wes Anderson does Star Wars'.

It's funny watchin those on youtube.

Every Wes Anderson film: A deadpan figure in solid colors against a pastel background, voiceover spouting quirky new-age musings, all to a soundtrack of indie music.

I am a big fan of Rushmore.

I can write a hit play why can't I have a little drink to unwind myself?

I like his other films, the ones I have seen, but Rushmore keeps it somewhat grounded in reality except for maybe the crazy stage plays.

Should I be embarrassed that I love that, pretty much every time?

I need to watch his latest works... I think Meteor City just dropped into the acceptable price range for a rental on Amazon, $5.99, so I'm running out of excuses to avoid it.
