Microsoft Leak Shows Dishonored 3, Oblivion Remaster, and More

A mishap in the Federal Trade Commission's legal battle with Microsoft has revealed a trove of unredacted internal emails revealing all sorts of Microsoft's plans, both past and future. The FTC has denied it is responsible for the leak. Details revealed include plans for new Xbox hardware and previous discussions of possible acquisition targets, including Valve and Nintendo. The Verge has coverage of the leaks, digging into the specifics in several cases. In addition to plans for a new refreshed disc-less Xbox Series X|S, the mails also reveal a vision for a new Xbox in 2028 bringing "cloud hybrid games." For PC gamers, this article discusses the revelation of projects in the works at ZeniMax Media when Microsoft acquired the company in 2020. Here's word:
Before it was acquired by Microsoft, ZeniMax Media, the parent company of studios like Bethesda Game Studios and id Software, was working on remasters of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, and a new entry in the Doom franchise, according to new documents revealed as part of FTC v. Microsoft. The games were included in a July 2020 Microsoft presentation about the then-potential ZeniMax acquisition.

Unannounced games in the presentation include:

  • The Oblivion remaster (originally set for fiscal year 2022)
  • Doom Year Zero and DLC (fiscal year 2023) and a second set of DLC (fiscal year 2024)
  • The Fallout 3 remaster (fiscal year 2024)
  • A sequel to Ghostwire: Tokyo (fiscal year 2024)
  • Dishonored 3 (fiscal year 2024)

There are also a number of titles for console / PC without specific names, including:

  • The Indiana Jones game (which we have known about for awhile and was originally scheduled for fiscal year 2022)
  • Project Kestrel (fiscal year 2023) and an expansion (fiscal year 2024)
  • Project Platinum
  • A vaguely-named “licensed IP game”

The only thing that made my ears perk up was the mention of MS thinking of buying Valve. I know Valve are a point of contention with some gamers, my personal opinion is that they are 1 of very few companies that I actually 'kinda like' and feel that the decisions they make are usually in line with my thoughts around gaming. I know that can all change with new mgmt or owners, so even the idea of them being bought by anyone made me get a little uncomfortable in my seat.

I guess I have to start planning for this anyway as it seems consolidation/monopolization is a trend that is only getting worse in every industry. It's been tough watching the game industry go from a niche hobbyist dream with passionate creative devs focused on sharing their hard work to whatever you want to call the industry today (profit scouring creative wasteland that leans on gambling tricks to get gamers to keep playing?)

Getting old can be so much fun sometimes and othertimes.... well not so much

Doom an Dishonored are the only real interesting ones on that list. Anything remastered by Bethesda will be a disappointment, just like the original game releases.

Would much rather see them remaster Morrowind since it's much more outdated than Oblivion and has a more interesting and imaginative art style/aesthetic.

Morrowind also has much more robust gameplay and RPG mechanics. It's probably the best Elder Scrolls game made by Bethesda, out of the box. Skyrim with mods comes close.

Ugh, no more remasters! Make new shit!

Too bad remasters sell insanely well.

Dishonored... I liked the first two, but I think I'm Dishonored out... the protagonists are super heroes fighting laughable AI, starts to feel like punching down pretty quick.

I'd go for a new version of FO3 and Oblivion. The latter is my least favorite Bethesda game since I started playing them, but that may be due to the fact that all the NPCs in that had humpty-dumpty faces (and yes, that's a technical term).

A new, non humpty-dumpty-face Oblivion would be cool.

It does, but due to inflation, it now costs $14, not $4.

To be fair, the original price of horse armor was $1.99.
Huh, seems like we're both wrong. Debuted at $2.50

Better than D4 at $25.

It was $2.50 on Xbox Marketplace because you had to buy it with the corresponding amount of marketplace Xbox points but the PC version was $1.99 .

The first package, a set of horse armor (barding) for Oblivion's steeds, was released on April 3, 2006, costing 200 Marketplace points, equivalent to US$2.50 or £1.50; the corresponding PC release cost was US$1.99.

EDIT: Thanks to Archive.org, we can actually travel back to 2006 and revisit the Obliviondownloads.com page. Here is a snapshot from shortly after horse armor was released and you can see it was sold for $1.99 from the website. As we can see, The Orrery and The Wizards' Tower were also $1.99 each. I bought them all back then because, minus the stupidly overdone level scaling, I really liked Oblivion. It had some awesome content and quests.

It's almost a little disgusting how they are milking these old games like Oblivion and FO3 just to have more fodder for Xbox and GamePass but it's a viable business strategy, of course. Can ya feel the squeeze, Sony? Yeah. That's you being squeezed out of the market. Buh-bye.
No different than what Sony did for Uncharted and TLoU.

Those games were never on Xbox/PC (well, until they were... many, many years later Wink ).

Elder Scrolls and Fallout (as well as many other brands that will now continue being Xbox-exclusive) are long established brands also on Playstation. Huge difference.

I just dont think its possible that they will make an Oblivion remaster that is better then what the community has already done on PC, but for consoles this makes a ton of sense. Too bad it's not for Sony as the original version of Oblivion on Playstation was as crappy as Skyrim. Okay, maybe not AS crappy, but close.

Dishonored 3 ah? I didn't beat 2, though enjoyed what I did play with it. The destruction physics were very satisfying. Beat the original and DLC.

I wouldn't mind going back into the world. Perhaps it gives me reason to fire back up 2 and finish it.

I bought Dishonored and all of its DLC during a Steam years ago, and somewhere along the line I also ended up with Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider. Only a few months ago did I finally pull Dishonored out of the backlog and play it.

It was fun, but it doesn't like high frame rates. They must have known this and put a frame rate cap on it, but it's still too high. I think the default was 130, but I still got glitches right from the start. The admiral guy at the very beginning of the game couldn't get off the boat, and if you played hide and seek with the little girl, she would just stand there after counting down. I re-loaded, skipped the hide and seek, but since the guy was still trying to figure out how to get off the boat, he never showed up for the cutscene. I edited the .ini and lower the frame cap to 120 and it fixed it for the most part.

I played through it on hard, and went for a stealthy no-kill run. Played the main game and story DLCs (skipped that trials one). I then re-played it, same difficulty, also stealthy but went full on kill mode. The second play through was more fun, quicker also since I didn't re-load everytime I messed up. I was interesting how the game changed based on the chaos level. Some maps were different, and some places played out different.
