Marvel's Avengers Fire Sale Ahead of Delisting

Marvel's Avengers - The Definitive Edition is now on sale on Steam and Xbox for 90% off. It's important to remember the announcement that sales and support of the superhero action/adventure ends after this month. However, this post explains what parts of the game will remain playable after that in case you want to get in on the bargain:
As we’ve previously announced, official support for Marvel’s Avengers: Definitive Edition is ending on Sept. 30, 2023, and the game will no longer be purchasable on Steam. However, we wanted to reassure you that while the game will no longer be for sale, the game will remain playable for owners largely as it is today.

To be specific on what is and isn’t changing on Sept. 30, 2023:

  • All currently available content will continue to be available as-is for solo and multiplayer play after Sept. 30, 2023.
  • If you own the game, it will remain in your game library for download and reinstallation after Sept. 30, 2023.
  • Limited-Time Events like the Red Room Takeover will continue to run after Sept. 30, 2023. These events will run in a two-week rotation. Reoccurring mission chains, events, and rewards will continue to refresh on the cadences they always have.
  • Customer support will no longer be available after Sept. 30, 2023.
  • All Operations and the War for Wakanda Expansion will continue to be playable as they are now.

Meh, I'd rather spend that $3.99 on Black Mesa - which is currently on sale at the same price.

I paid $20 for that and it was worth every penny. What they did with Xen was incredible.

Black Mesa's Xen is almost a second game.
Brilliant.

I remember buying Black Mesa when it was around 15-20 bucks. Xen was not complete yet and I never even got to the part where you go to Xen in the original Half Life. Getting to the point where Black Mesa ended because Xen was incomplete, felt like I beat Half Life. I made it to a point I never did in the original. At that point I felt accomplished and was Okay with Xen not being completed and forgot all about it.

Insert Xen portion and replaying the entire game all over. Wow, what an experience that was. The combination of the soundtrack and environment they put together for Xen was unreal. I never had a clue they could accomplish something Valve never got to. As you said, it was like an entirely new game. You almost forget that hours ago you were running around a science facility in the desert dodging bullets.

Loved every minute of it.

I agree with you, if you find a soul that doesn't already own Black Mesa and had to choose. If you don't own Black Mesa, are you even a gamer? lol

Not bothering to learn all of the hard-earned lessons in the "looter shooter" (or "smasher" as it were) because you were too busy figuring out how to nickel and dime your customers to death is the real negative in my book. Removing the unmitigated greed without fixing the many core defects in the game doesn't suddenly make it better. Worth it for less than the cost of a Big Mac maybe, but only just.

I was contemplating buying this when it was on sale around 15-20 bucks in the past and passed it up. At 4 bucks, why the hell not? That's cheaper than a medium iced coffee with Almond milk at Dunkin Donuts these days!

I'm playing through the single player game right now. It's pretty decent! The loot system feels pointless; you only upgrade so fights don't get any harder than they already are; I've not felt like I'm actually IMPROVING at any point, just holding the status quo. Upgrade-point purchased attacks don't appear to do more damage than others, they're just additional animations. The story's been decently fun so far, though, and Kamala Khan in this is WAY better than the kinda whiny one in the D+ series.

For the $4 GMG is asking for it, it's a good deal. The multiplayer can be fun for a bit (we played that first, mistakenly thinking the game's campaign was multiplayer, somehow), but it does feel very same-y, even after only doing a couple of missions. Go here, beat up doods, go there, beat up doods. Sometimes you have to have at least one person inside of a zone while beating up doods to progress.

This and GotG both have the same problem: the characters look like dollar store knock offs of the "real" ones. Sure, you can say the comics came first, but whose faces/voices do you think 99% of the world associates with those characters? Lack of actor likeness is going to hurt the sales of these games every time, even IF the game is good, and not by a small amount. This game's MTX bullshit definitely ALSO was a problem, but the cover art just reminds me of those Kung-Fu Panda rip-off movies on netflix.

As always, I was only interested in the single player and not in some live service multiplayer whatever bullshit. Avengers offers a decent single player experience. I played through the entire campaign and the single player DLC content including the Wakanda campaign in ~36 hours. It was good fun.

My only criticism would be the sectioned levels with choke points (elevators and gates galore) which is an unpleasant spillover effect of the coop and multiplayer focus of the game. You are obviously supposed to gather your party before venturing forth at those choke points but when you are playing single player it seems pretty unnecessary and like artificial barriers.

It can also be pretty hard to keep track of what you have unlocked on which hero and what the controls (PC M&K) are for certain skills, actions etc.
You do have a certain level of control over how annoying this is, however, since you can freely choose the hero you want to play for most missions so you can just pick your favorite hero whose skills (and corresponding controls) you know best. The obvious downside is less variety, of course.

If anyone is even remotely interested in a good old action romp then I'd recommend grabbing the game before it's too late. I'm not even a Marvel or a superhero fan but still enjoyed the spectacle. I'm a slow player so you can probably finish the campaign plus single player DLC (Wakanda) in 25 - 30 hours as a regular player. It's selling for €3.99 on Steam. At that price, it is a no-brainer.

Reposting from last night's sale section:

I enjoyed the Avengers game, I would recommend it to any Marvel fan. Most word of mouth was about the live service portion and how boring it ended up being grinding slightly randomized instanced missions at the endgame, but that's not all there is to it... There's an entire singleplayer campaign with a fairly lengthy story and cutscenes and Tomb Raider-like exploration/platforming/puzzles between combat encounters (it's made by the same devs, after all). It's a no-brainer at only $4, buy it now because it's being delisted at the end of the month. It will remain playable after that, they're just done supporting it.

It's not as well done as the Guardians of the Galaxy one released a year later, but there's a good 15-20 or so hours here, at least. Just seeing all the PhysX-style debris flying around while Hulk is doing his thing made it worth it to me, and I paid more than they're asking now.
