This was something I noticed early on and didn't think much of it initially. Now I wonder if it's to make combat more interesting or just a nuisance. The fun of the older Diablos was being so powerful that you just blast through everything. Sure, that can get boring as well over time, though it made the feeling of having powerful loot worth it. Though making every fight in D4 competitive feels like I'm playing against the waves. I'm trying to earn better gears, though then matched against my level? Doesn't make sense in some ways.

I just finished the last of the content Saturday (got to 100 seasonal and finished all the seasonal journey tasks to get hidden title). Here are my thoughts.

I was fine with the game up until about 70. Even then, I was still good until about 78-80ish. The problem becomes that for the last 30 levels, there is no greater tier of armor/weapons than Ancestral. So if you get a decent piece of gear, with the 4 affixes you want on it near 70, there's literally almost no chance of getting a better piece. Sure, a 800 piece might be slightly better armor value than a 725, but since your damage reduction from armor is lowering as you level, it's not really worth it if you have the proper affixes increasing your DR directly, and adding to the proper damage categories. Even pieces with 3 affixes are problematic when the increasing enchant costs get out of hand fast. I've dropped 35 million gold on a piece trying to get a decent last affix, and not gotten it... multiple times.

The game also needs something more to do than nightmare dungeons at those levels. Open world stuff is practically worthless after you get to a certain level, because the enemies lag behind you in level, which incurs the XP penalty, which they made worse with that patch not too long ago. You have Helltides, but even then, they're only 3 levels above you, which was fine when that granted maximum bonus, but now you need +10 to get max XP bonus.

I don't know if I'm up for the seasonal grind if they're literally going to be back to back like Season1 and Season2. I expected a month or so break between them... maybe do a prelude event on eternal or something for the month. Give me a reason to play my original Eternal character again. But at this speed, it just becomes a graveyard for your seasonal characters never to play again. Also, inventory is going to get worse and worse with stash as you have more seasonal characters moved over to Eternal at the end.

I definitely got my money's worth of play time, but kind of wish there was something to keep playing other than time-limited seasons, as they just seem to be FOMO content.

I enjoyed playing through the campaign, but I was pretty much done immediately after. I just don't find repeating the same content over and over to be a worthwhile use of my time.

No, you don't. I'm not sure if the previous poster mentioning the $10 thought that was the case, but you only pay more if you want the exclusive cosmetics they have in the season pass.

currently $90cdn + tax for the cheapest edition, need another game client, need to pay more for seasonal content (?)... no thanks, I stick with PoE for the ARPG itch. Yes I need to pay $$ for extra storage and other quality of life upgrades. But i paid that like 10 years ago and still work today.

i bought d1,d2,d3 on release, im not bothering with d4 until heavy discount or possibly not at all. I got my money worth from d3 but there are too many other games out at the moment for me to care about d4.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Loved the story, especially some of the pivotal cut scenes, but by the time Season 1 came out I was completely bored of grinding for unique items to buildcraft with. The hearts were neat but once you get to just farming for gear to farm better I completely lose interest in Diablo. Will probably just ignore it till they have a major story expansion hit.

I have a 3rd play through of Baldur’s Gate to finish and then Phantom Liberty hits.

I picked up D4 on sale (Ultimate edition by mistake, lol). So far, it has my attention, but I can't help but think of the inevitable that is coming. I'm literally going to hit a wall where I'm just sick of it all. I won't care to progress anymore of my characters or do anything. It's the realization that everything you're doing is a grind. A grind for what exactly? lol.

Though if you put that aside and just enjoy the game for a basic playthrough and focus more on story and whatnot, it hasn't been so bad. It is definitely a massive game in comparison to the prior ones, but I can't help but think D2 and D3 had more character in their locations. D4 feels very largely copy and paste, make some variations of the land. The combat is Okay, but not as satisfying as I felt D3 was or obviously 2 (probably still the greatest of them all).

That said, if you don't take the game too serious to grind for every little bit of meaningless, you might find enjoyment. If you want to ask me which one I like best so far, I'd rank them, D2,D3,D4,D1. I know, I know, how can I rank a classic last? It was good for what it did, but no way in hell would I ever go back to play it, lol.

"You won't believe the new armor sets, weapons, and cosmetics in the shop! It's going to be a lot!!" I did season 1 and it felt like Eternal Realm with like 3% more content. Hearts were...okay. Then we had a bunch of little caves that take like 5 minutes to do. I'd never done a Diablo Season before, so went ahead and paid the $10, and likely won't be doing one again.

Sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of rocket engines in the middling space game that's currently taking up my time until the next shiny thing.

I will finish the main game one day. But I will never do any seasonal content because rat races are not my thing.
