MechWarrior 5: Clans Announced

Piranha Games announces MechWarrior 5: Clans, a new standalone MechWarrior game coming to PC and consoles next year. This promises a different approach to the series: "MechWarrior 5: Clans, while retaining the MechWarrior 5 designation, represents a transformative step forward in the MechWarrior 5 franchise. MechWarrior 5: Clans linear campaign will be an evolution of gameplay and storytelling in the MechWarrior series, experienced from the perspective of Clan Smoke Jaguar in the pivotal conflict known as the Clan Invasion starting in the year 3050." A short Teaser Trailer teases the news with a brief cinematic, a logo, and some flames, concluding with logos for Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation, and Xbox. Here's more:

Going back to Mechwarrior 2 which is awesome but also horrendous at the same time..."Laser bullets" and non-functional autocannons!

I'm glad we finally have punch and melee capability after all these years, even if it might be generally ignored.

You could argue that technically it isn't a *real* simulator, but the Mechwarrior franchise has always been about creating an experience that *feels* like a simulator.
I mean, sort of. It has to do with mission design, too. In most sims that don't have lasers and FTL drives, you might have a mission to fly a bomber, bomb your target, and go home. The singleplayer campaigns of most space or 'Mech sims are designed around missions where your commander expects that you, personally, can take out 20 or 30 enemy units equivalent to or better than your own. If it's simulating anything, it's a Hollywood action movie. With the exceptions of the original Mechwarrior and MWO, the Mechwarrior games and all the rest have always been closer to MechAssault than something like Falcon or IL-2 Sturmovik. No one really wants a return to Mechwarrior 1 singleplayer where your lance takes out another lance and the mission's over.

But I feel the Mechwarrior audience has been pretty consistently bitchy over the years. From MW3 to now, the worst game has always been the one that's out right now. It doesn't matter how many requests from previous games are addressed -- cockpit models, destructible buildings, more 'Mechs, co-op, (sigh) physical attacks -- the older games were better and whoever currently has the license is incompetent and should never be allowed to make another Mechwarrior game again.

MW5: Mercs is pretty awful. It's a single player bot version of Mechwarrior online for the most part, with horrible random "missions" and was a dissappointing entry in the MW franchise. The first one to really dissappoint.

This looks like a proper MW2 sequel, with a story mode and a proper campaign with hand crafted missions. If this turns out to be the case, it's going to be a great game. Piranha has proven to be able to get the "sim" part of the game right, they just haven't nailed the "feel" of the original games, since none of their games had any proper "missions".

Hopefully optimistic for this one, although they should have called it Mechwarrior: Clans since the MW5 is forever tainted with the paintbrush of mediocre gameplay.

Fingers crossed. Played the last one despite it's flaws. Felt like the 90s getting HOTAS to work early on. Finally a mech game after a long wait and so many cancelled titles.

Hope we can build our mech inventory, arsenal as the story progresses, joystick/hotas support and environments worthy of the franchise. The $ in next Gen consoles might motivate someone to make something good. The tech is there to get it done.

Like with the next stalker game I'm gonna stop myself from thinking and hope for a nice surprise when the time comes.

The map of Satisfactory is... huge. VERY huge. And open.

yeah i never saw that either. like sometimes they'd pop up if they suddenly broke cover from behind something, but i never saw anybody just materialize right in front of me.

They had me at "linear campaign".

As long as there's no infinite spawn bullshit and a lot of the issues that have been fixed by mods are built-in, I'm in.

man i never saw infinite spawns, and i played almost a year after release. i know bop was griping about it too, but i played the entire mercs campaign and never saw infinite spawns. well except for the last mission, but that was story justified.
