Volition Closed

A farewell message on the Volition Website announces developer Volition has shut down after over three decades in the business. In June an announcement from Volition Parent Embracer braced everyone for upcoming layoffs and studio closures, and the Saints Row and Descent developer is a high-profile victim of that. Here's word:
"The Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the globe for 30 years. We've been driven by a passion for our community and always worked to deliver joy, surprise, and delight.

"This past June. Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program. they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.

"To help our team, we are working to provide job assistance and help smooth the transition for our Volition family members. We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts.'

If the most recent Saints Row hadn't been since a colossal fuckup, I wonder if their fate would have been different.

i find this sad, for some reason... at this point it was likely little more than just a brand name i liked, i suppose.

can't imagine any of the veterans from the days when this studio took risks, tried new genres, swung for the fences were still around. descent, freespace, summoner, red faction, seminal titles in their own ways.

at some point i stopped paying attention when they had obviously become emrbacer's Saint's Row Industrial Complex. i actually didn't even know they tried to reboot the series.

All they had to do was make another SR3 and the reboot would've been amazing, but somehow they managed to screw up even something that simple.

It would have needed to be to be pretty successful I think, given that they had already had one strike with Agents of Mayhem.

It really is too bad. Somewhere along the way they lost their edge. Agents of Mayhem and Saints Row reboot are just so soulless and you can't really feel any developer passion.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Saints Row 2022 was an absolute embarrassment. If that's what they think good writing, good characters, good action, and good dialogue is, as storied a developer they once were I can't say that I am sad to see them go. They were already dead.

It's not "somehow". They intentionally screwed it up. Not like "oh we're going to tank Volition" but if you look at their twitter feeds and their interviews as the game was announced, they repeatedly talked about not liking the original games, or not playing the original games, or being upset with the humor of the original games, or the need to make sure they weren't "punching down" compared to the original games.

This is the game they explicitly wanted to make. Their attitude to the original fans of the series were basically "suck on it". This was an arguably inept team. I mean, the moment I saw that there were shop buildings you couldn't go in and the vendor was out on the street in front of the door I knew that the game was probably irredeemable.

Volition made Saint's Row 2-4 and they made Freespace & Freespace 2, but that company hasn't been around in a very, very long time. I'd say rest in peace, but the truth is I mourned Volition a long time ago.

It was such good writing that they apparently pulled a bunch of dialogue out of the missions.

I really don't feel bad for them, many companies come and gone. "My Volition" was in Decent and FreeSpace era - 2 of my favourite space games

I already felt sad for them when they gave up FreeSpace series.

Some of those complaints are entirely valid. Some of the SR humor felt cheap. I mean, it was mostly all cheap, but some was truly cheap. "Freckle Bitches" was particularly terrible, but a lot didn't work.

But to throw it all out for that. A lot also did work. There were genuinely character under the stereotypes, and some cheap jokes landed pretty well.

I'll still take SR3 over any GTA any day of the week. So many better design decisions, and some better thought behind the characters. That and 2 were near perfect games. Reworking them to be more modern, less punching down, shouldn't have been hard. It could still be ludicrous and over the top. My main character was always a 7 foot tall 1000 pound naked British man. Having him become president was pretty great.

Loved Summoner 1 and Descent 3.
Have to play Freespace and any Saint Row yet.

Liked the Red Faction games though I never could finish Guerrilla, as eventually in some mission so many foes began spawning that you couldn't ever win, what was that?.

Sad about the last SR, though most "big" games today aren't that good or they run poorly even with the best hardware.

Thankfully Starfield has good reviews plus it can be played in a reasonable PC.

I think I was the only person who enjoyed Red Faction Armageddon more than Guerrilla. It wasn't open world but the guns were fun.

Such a shame! I know Volition was in deep trouble after their Saints Row Reboot. It was really a bad game in all ways possible! Now we won't never get a Descent 4 or Freespace 3 game ever again though that was an almost very slim to no chance these were getting worked on anyway while they were focusing on a crappy reboot. And the original devs being out of the office a long time ago. It's tragic!

Oh I know they are completely to blame, the "somehow" is more from a perspective of a fan whose not aware of the current studio's perspective, which to be fair, is most of the market-and who just wants another fun game in the series.

Shoot yourself in the foot and surprisingly you are losing the race. Whoever designed SR 2022 is to blame. The biggest (but not only) problems are the character designs - OMG. Who wrote those characters? A 17-year old?

So, in the end, the SD Lucifer got them and finished them off.

Another one un-embraced . I wonder how many more are to follow. First Campfire Cabal, now Volition, who's next? Must be nice and relaxed days being an Embracer studio lead in these times...

The next studio to close is Valve.

Last successful paid game was in 2011, a sequel, Portal 2.
Then some shitty card game in 2018, Artifact.
And a VR game in 2020 (Felix or something), and we know *nobody* plays VR.
