Volition Closed

A farewell message on the Volition Website announces developer Volition has shut down after over three decades in the business. In June an announcement from Volition Parent Embracer braced everyone for upcoming layoffs and studio closures, and the Saints Row and Descent developer is a high-profile victim of that. Here's word:
"The Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the globe for 30 years. We've been driven by a passion for our community and always worked to deliver joy, surprise, and delight.

"This past June. Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program. they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.

"To help our team, we are working to provide job assistance and help smooth the transition for our Volition family members. We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts.'

All they had to do was make another SR3 and the reboot would've been amazing, but somehow they managed to screw up even something that simple.

It's not "somehow". They intentionally screwed it up. Not like "oh we're going to tank Volition" but if you look at their twitter feeds and their interviews as the game was announced, they repeatedly talked about not liking the original games, or not playing the original games, or being upset with the humor of the original games, or the need to make sure they weren't "punching down" compared to the original games.

This is the game they explicitly wanted to make. Their attitude to the original fans of the series were basically "suck on it". This was an arguably inept team. I mean, the moment I saw that there were shop buildings you couldn't go in and the vendor was out on the street in front of the door I knew that the game was probably irredeemable.

Volition made Saint's Row 2-4 and they made Freespace & Freespace 2, but that company hasn't been around in a very, very long time. I'd say rest in peace, but the truth is I mourned Volition a long time ago.

Some of those complaints are entirely valid. Some of the SR humor felt cheap. I mean, it was mostly all cheap, but some was truly cheap. "Freckle Bitches" was particularly terrible, but a lot didn't work.

But to throw it all out for that. A lot also did work. There were genuinely character under the stereotypes, and some cheap jokes landed pretty well.

I'll still take SR3 over any GTA any day of the week. So many better design decisions, and some better thought behind the characters. That and 2 were near perfect games. Reworking them to be more modern, less punching down, shouldn't have been hard. It could still be ludicrous and over the top. My main character was always a 7 foot tall 1000 pound naked British man. Having him become president was pretty great.

I really don't feel bad for them, many companies come and gone. "My Volition" was in Decent and FreeSpace era - 2 of my favourite space games

I already felt sad for them when they gave up FreeSpace series.

Saints Row 2022 was an absolute embarrassment. If that's what they think good writing, good characters, good action, and good dialogue is, as storied a developer they once were I can't say that I am sad to see them go. They were already dead.

It was such good writing that they apparently pulled a bunch of dialogue out of the missions.

If the most recent Saints Row hadn't been since a colossal fuckup, I wonder if their fate would have been different.

It would have needed to be to be pretty successful I think, given that they had already had one strike with Agents of Mayhem.

It really is too bad. Somewhere along the way they lost their edge. Agents of Mayhem and Saints Row reboot are just so soulless and you can't really feel any developer passion.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

i find this sad, for some reason... at this point it was likely little more than just a brand name i liked, i suppose.

can't imagine any of the veterans from the days when this studio took risks, tried new genres, swung for the fences were still around. descent, freespace, summoner, red faction, seminal titles in their own ways.

at some point i stopped paying attention when they had obviously become emrbacer's Saint's Row Industrial Complex. i actually didn't even know they tried to reboot the series.
