Apparently NightDive and TFE have been communicating for some time.
https://theforceengine.github.io/2023/08/22/Nightdive-Remaster-FAQ.html

TFE's lucius mentions new content coming in the NightDive version. I'm hoping that might be an additional campaign but I may be asking too much.

I guess this will make the Force Engine pointless now, poor guy, hes put alot of work into it. I'll keep using it till this is released. Next, I hope they remaster Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, and Mysteries of the Sith, in addition to Jedi Outcast and Academy.

I actually (re-)played the entire Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series back to back many years ago and even back then (that must have been in the early 2010s), I felt like the old games had aged horribly. The level design is very convoluted, and contrary to modern games, you have no alternative routes. You need to find that *one* passage to advance through a level and that sometimes gets real tedious.

I liked Jedi Academy the best and that one is a game I could maybe even see myself replaying if/when remastered but the old games are best left tucked away in a nostalgic corner of my gaming soul. They were great at their time but now I'd rather focus on clearing my endless backlog than replaying something like Dark Forces.
In fact, my backlog includes Jedi Survivor so if I should get the urge to play a Star Wars game then it'd be that one.

There are alternate routes to many maps in Dark Forces.

Fond memories of this game, but much as I'm a retro FPS fan, not sure this one still holds up. May give it a try for nostalgia's sake.

I do remember the map when you're walking along a narrow path on a cliff, being the only time in a 3D game that I ever felt dizzy.

I don't see much of a remastering here yet. Only new cinematics. I hope they'll fix 2,5 engine flaws, especially distorted up&down look.

I don't care about cut scenes, and the actual game play still looks awkwardly jank. I enjoyed the original back in the day, but my memory of it is that it was so crude by today's standards that it will take a lot more than slightly better graphics to give this game the features and detail we all expect from FPS games now.

Games this old that they "remaster" should just be free updates to generate franchise interest and to show off what modern hardware can do, like with Quake and Quake 2. But I guess that would cut into Disney's profits....and we know how poor they are right? /sarcasm

I recently played the fan-remake demo and while the game itself plays fine, it feels so empty on details compared to modern games and so does this preview.

TheForceEngine is coming along really well. Plus it will eventually run Outlaws too!

This Nightdive release is welcome.
It is early footage so I'm hoping they will add more graphical bells and whistles though. The cutscenes are a major improvement, but the ingame footage atm isn't much of a jump from TFE or DarkXL imo

Hogwash, it's like a restored picture, once updated a good game will shine through.

Hope they do Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2, Thief 1 & 2, Descent 3 and more.

Prefer new games / graphics ?, fine.

I replayed it a few months ago with the Force Engine and had a good time. It does feel like another era, since it was, but it was still fun to play.

I just played Dark Forces a little bit ago. It does NOT hold up very well at all. It FEELS old. It was great in its day, but a full-blown remake is needed to get it up to even early 2000s standards.

This is really one of the better boomer-era shooters. It featured some fairly non-linear map design and coherent objectives beyond the "get key, open door" variety found in other shooters of the time, and did a damn good job of using the Star Wars IP.

That being said, the lack of effort in this "remaster" is palpable.

Hoping Nightdive remasters Mechwarrior 2 and MW2: Mercenaries. Licensing issues probably a blocker there though.

It's interesting how these remasters seem to be announced shortly after open source projects get these classic games running, one would hope this is purely coincidence...

I never played this younger or seen my cousin who had it all when he was younger on the PC DOS days. That said, it's weird seeing a shooter that looks Quake/Doomish in the Star Wars universe. Not sure I'd pick this up yet unless on a low sale. As others said, the backlog with CURRENT games is so great, it's almost impossible to go back to the oldies.

Yep the Quake2 remaster is great.
And yeah I liked Q2 back at release, and I liked Ground Zero.

Looking forward to this remaster, and giving the beatdown to Gen. Mohc.
