Out of the Blue

I had what I thought was a complete system crash last night while playing Diablo IV, making me worry my workaround of limiting the game's framerate wasn't as effective as I thought. Then I realized this was one of those insane reboots Windows 10 will arbitrarily execute to apply an update. I know there are third-party tools to fight this, but it doesn't seem right to require extraordinary effort to take control of such a situation. I'm frustrated by this, though not as much as I would have been if the reboot came just minutes earlier, which would have ruined my participation taking down the World Boss.

Honestly, from what you have described it sounds to me like you're having hardware issues. Typically, (in my experience as a tech), heating (cpu fan, gpu fan), bad memory, video card failing. Less often, the PSU is insufficient (wattage, failing). Very rarely, the gpu and/or memory pins need cleaning (clean pencil erasor). How is the airflow?

BTW, Windows 11 is fine for gaming. If you're worried about privacy and ads, consider something like bloatynosy.

Unless your Windows computer is a member of a domain where update policies are controlled by a network administrator, you can discretely control when, how and under what conditions updates are downloaded, installed, and the machine rebooted (when necessary).

I've always heard these stories, but never have had it happen to me (of course I also shut down my PC and it seems like a lot of people don't). I thought all of the update issues were relegated to Win 10 Home edition where you had to jump through hoops to manage it. Assuming you're running Pro it should be easy to control update behavior through the Windows update settings. Worst case scenario it should give you a popup warning a reboot is imminent.

Not sure why it would restart while you were using it, unless you were playing at 3am and that's when you have the restart set for (that's the default). They really don't expect you up that late.
If it happened at any other time of day, then that's...very strange, really.

Win10 was a dumpster fire with random updates but I thought they fixed it late in its life. I updated to Win11 last year hasn’t happened even once. Between the better performance and tabs in file manager it’s a great upgrade.

Windows 10 Updating.
From a microsoft forum answered by Martmcd a Volunteer Moderator, so you know it's quality. circa 2021 so things may have changed.
use the Group policy settings to control the windows updates
make sure that notifications is turned on.
settings -> update & security -> windows updates
click on advanced options, turn on update notifications
when an update is ready, you will get a notification. it will not be installed until you say so (but it will nag)
if a restart is required after installation , you will get another notification, at this point you can delay the restart.
And supposedly there's also a registry hack.
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-updates-restart-disable
Prevent Windows Update Automatic Restart using Registry Editor
Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
If you don’t see it, create one. You may have to create \WindowsUpdate\AU.
Now under this key, create a new 32-bit DWORD called NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers and give it a hexadecimal value data of 1. This will prevent automatic reboot while users are logged on.
This should stop Windows from automatically restarting your computer after Windows Updates.

What happens if you don’t put your phone in airplane mode?
I've now had my dose of junk science weirdness for the day.

It's for the safety of the plane and your fellow passengers. (now whether that is junk science is still up for debate)
