Out of the Blue

I had what I thought was a complete system crash last night while playing Diablo IV, making me worry my workaround of limiting the game's framerate wasn't as effective as I thought. Then I realized this was one of those insane reboots Windows 10 will arbitrarily execute to apply an update. I know there are third-party tools to fight this, but it doesn't seem right to require extraordinary effort to take control of such a situation. I'm frustrated by this, though not as much as I would have been if the reboot came just minutes earlier, which would have ruined my participation taking down the World Boss.

Windows 10 Updating.
From a microsoft forum answered by Martmcd a Volunteer Moderator, so you know it's quality. circa 2021 so things may have changed.
use the Group policy settings to control the windows updates
make sure that notifications is turned on.
settings -> update & security -> windows updates
click on advanced options, turn on update notifications
when an update is ready, you will get a notification. it will not be installed until you say so (but it will nag)
if a restart is required after installation , you will get another notification, at this point you can delay the restart.
And supposedly there's also a registry hack.
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-updates-restart-disable
Prevent Windows Update Automatic Restart using Registry Editor
Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
If you don’t see it, create one. You may have to create \WindowsUpdate\AU.
Now under this key, create a new 32-bit DWORD called NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers and give it a hexadecimal value data of 1. This will prevent automatic reboot while users are logged on.
This should stop Windows from automatically restarting your computer after Windows Updates.
