Out of the Blue

To my relief, I fixed a nagging problem with my system, though it's not the crashing I mentioned the other day. Frequently windows would be shrunk and rearranged when my PC woke up from sleeping as if set up for a lower resolution. I have an ultrawide monitor, and it seems like Windows sometimes forgot this when it napped and would scrunch things together when it awoke. Some research shows this is a common problem with two commonly suggested solutions. The safer-sounding one involves removing unused monitor profiles. The sketchier-sounding one entails changing incorrect resolutions via registry editing. Oddly, I had both "issues," despite having a recent clean install of Windows 10 and only one monitor. I tried the safer-sounding tip first and eventually dared to try the scarier one, but neither solved the problem, though nothing broke, either. I should add that I knew the bug I was chasing was inconsequential, but I'm guessing many of you can relate to getting anal about your PC acting strangely. I thought I finally solved things when I noticed the monitor used DisplayPort 3 on my graphics card and switched it to DisplayPort 1. But it came back, albeit less frequently, which I can't interpret (Joe Versus the Volcano: "I have no response to that"). I was refusing to cave in and use a third-party monitor utility when I realized that Microsoft's own PowerToys has a tool called "FancyZones" designed for widescreen and multi-monitor setups. It allows you to designate zones on the screen and snap windows to them. After setting this up, windows sometimes still end up resized and rearranged, but PowerToys fancied the hell out of my issue, and it's trivial to put them back where they belong. I'm pleased with this outcome. If only all of life's problems were so minor and solvable.

Fancy Round-up

Either shut down (as Tact says, modern SSDs boot very fast) or just leave it on and let the monitor sleep. Honestly, the amount of power a modern system uses in idle is miniscule. All modern CPUs throttle down to low power mode when idle. I just leave my workstation on 24/7. The gaming PC I do shut down when not jn use.

I am having pretty much the exact same issue as Blue. I have also tried the same methods he found and also had no success with it.
I don't think it's a computer sleep issue but rather how the computer handles the monitor going to sleep (or off).

Total shot in the dark: I once had a monitor that had an aggressive power saver mode enabled. When it went to sleep, it completely disconnected from the PC, leading Windows to think no monitor was connected and Windows would revert to a generic monitor temporarily, and default lower resolution, and that would scramble up the windows and icons when the monitor woke up. Most modern monitors have a setting that will disable this (eco mode, power saving, etc). The monitor still goes to sleep, and turns off the display, but it keeps the DisplayPort or HDMI port alive so that the PC doesn't lose connection to the monitor.

Hope this helps...

The nagging problem wth my system is that it badly needs a processor/mb upgrade. Probably either during the Black Friday sales or after Christmas I will dive in.

I have a question for the studio audience: I have a Nvidia 2060 Super currently, the MSI one. (I tend to go with MSI or Asus) Should I get a second one and go dual cards, sell it and get a 40X0, or wait until whatever comes after 40X0 and get that? Thoughts?

As others have pointed out, SLI is no longer supported, even if your card has it. Depending on your budget go with a 4070 or 4070ti. If that's out of your price range, I'd consider a 3070 before a 4060.

I have never used sleep mode in a desktop PC. It's never been properly supported. Laptop makers go though a lot of extra hoops to make it worm right, but they can control the hardware and drivers.

i use an ultrawide too, nothing like it. can i setup Fancy Zones to also make some of my auto-start apps appear in the same part of to screen space while they're starting up instead of just dead centre, or do i have to have a heavier program like something from Stardock running in the background all the time for that func ?

SLI is not supported anymore so that's out the window. if you can get a 4070ti or better, go for that. i haven't heard much in the way of rumors about when the next gen cards will come out, but if they stick to their history it would be next year some time. a 2060 is a old ass card so i doubt you could wait that long. below a 4070ti it would be cheaper to get a high end 30xx for the same performance (except RT/dlss3).

Welcome to the world of displayport on windows which has always been a mess and seemingly not a priority for Microsoft.

I'm pretty sure that the 2060S doesn't support SLI, but it's something you shouldn't really consider anyways. Support for it has been dumped across the board so getting it to work is few and far between.

If you are thinking of getting a new card I think it mostly comes down to how long you're hoping to hold onto it, how much you want to spend, and what resolution you'll be running.

If you boot from an SSD or NVMe drive, it only takes about 10 seconds for a cold/warm boot to desktop, I've noticed. Sleep depends on your device drivers, too, as your GPU needs to sleep and wake properly, as well as all of the other devices in the system, and your motherboard bios also has to handle it correctly. I stopped using sleep years ago because it was so unreliable, but the 90 seconds of boot time was reason enough to use it! But now that Windows boots in ~10 seconds I've disabled sleep permanently as it's simply more trouble than it's worth, imo. Sleep made a great deal of sense when booting from platter hard drives, but it was unreliable. Booting from NVMe rarely has any complications and it's so fast!
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

I had occasional issues with windows being misplaced after waking from hibernation, too, and Fancy Zones goes a good job of remembering which windows were in which zones. I have the "Keep windows in their zones when the resolution changes" option enabled, so I don't even have to move them back myself. Sometimes it reverts to the default "three panes with two thin gutters" layout, though, and I have to manually switch it back.

I have a setup where my PC is connected to a TV in another room, and that might be contributing to my problem. I'm guessing sometimes Windows sees the TV before the monitor wakes up from sleep, and puts all the windows there. Then the monitor wakes up, Windows realizes it put everything on the wrong screen and moves them, but forgets to put them in the right places.

Fortunately for Glukhovsky, he is not actually in Russia, and was sentenced in absentia.
His current whereabouts are unknown.
My advice for Dmitry is to stay away from windows, Russians who tell the truth have been known to spontaneously toss themselves out of them.

I've been using Desktop Restore for customers who complain about moving icons (yes, i know they're not windows). http://www.midiox.com/index.htm?http://www.midiox.com/desktoprestore.htm
