Path of Exile 2 Now Standalone

Grinding Gear Games announces a change in plans for Path of Exile 2. Despite the name, this was previously planned as an expansion for Path of Exile. Now it will be a standalone sequel to the original Path of Exile. Both action/RPGs will continue to operate side-by-side, but purchases will be shared between both free-to-play games. Here's a new gameplay trailer and word from the official website:
Path of Exile 2 is a next generation Action RPG created by Grinding Gear Games. Set years after the original Path of Exile, you will return to the dark world of Wraeclast and seek to end the corruption that is spreading. Path of Exile 2 is a free-to-play online multiplayer game with co-op for up to six players.

Path of Exile 2 is a separate game to the original Path of Exile. We will continue to offer expansions for both games going forward. They are completely free-to-play and will never be "pay to win". Purchases are shared between the two games.

Huh. I wonder what changed their mind? Doing this means maintaining two games... I wonder if it the original will be "softened" to make it more inviting to a larger audience...

A reworked skill and gem system and other mechanics ... I imagine it would be hard to maintain balance between the two systems in the same endgame. (for crossplay purposes). Heck, with all the myriad weird interactions between gems/passives in PoE - introducing a whole new game's worth of them in crossplay could open up a huge can of worms. How many times have weirdly broken interactions been found that require balances/nerfs?

I could be way off the mark. (I haven't watched the livestream)

Also worth reiterating that this is one of the best free-to-play monetistation models that exists (IMO). Die-hards can end game content without paying a cent.
