Jagged Alliance 3 Released

Jagged Alliance 3 is now available on GOG.com* and Steam, finally offering a new mainline installment in the tactical combat series. This is for Windows and word is it "runs perfectly well and smoothly" on Steam Deck. Plans for a third Jagged Alliance game seemed cursed for a while, as JA3 was announced and cancelled more than once. In the interim, a the brand was diluted by a bunch of spinoff titles such as Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, Jagged Alliance: Crossfire, Jagged Alliance Online, Jagged Alliance: Flashback, and Jagged Alliance: Rage! Things stabilized in 2021 when the IP ended up with THQ Nordic, which led to this release. This post on Steam offers the wacky Release Trailer (Rated "H" for employing the Honest Trailers guy) with a look at gameplay. Here's an outline of your mission:
Seize control of the liberation campaign, meticulously craft your strategic approach, recruit your beloved mercenaries, and guide them through thrilling tactical turn-based clashes. Immerse yourself in the ambiance of a captivating 90s action movie, complete with memorable one-liners, nefarious adversaries, and a symphony of bullets filling the air.

Jagged Alliance 3 marks a monumental milestone as Haemimont Games and THQ Nordic proudly present the long-awaited successor to the legendary strategy franchise.

...Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, Jagged Alliance: Crossfire, Jagged Alliance Online, Jagged Alliance: Flashback, and Jagged Alliance: Rage!...

All of which varied from 'ok I guess ' to "OMFG what were they thinking?!? ". Which makes the overall positive reception of JA3 extremely surprising, but welcome to be sure.

Is this series any good? What games would compare to it?

Try thinking maybe X-Com in a 'Narcos' type experience with a suicide squad conceit. Of course that minimalist description relies on you being somewhat familiar with those properties. 😁

JA2 is one of the best turn based tactical games ever made. This is a totally different developer though, but reviews are promising.

I preordered from GoG but I’ll probably wait for some mods and more polish before playing.

JA2 is definitely still worth playing today. I did a full playthrough just a few years ago, with most of the recommended recent mods. The modding scene was quite active back in the day, and there is lots of extra content to enjoy. Many great improvements there. But I'm afraid you may need to complete a full undergraduate course in JA2 modding to get it all set up correctly. 'Twas a bit complicated...

It could compare to X-Com, Laser Squad or Phoenix Point, but it is my humble opinion that no other game has come close to matching the tactical layer of Jagged Alliance 2 and it hasn't been for a lack of trying either. Jagged Alliance 2 was Sirtech at the top of their game.

When do we get the JA merge with Tropico?
Now that's a game I'd like to see.

Mhh, my first experience in this game is a bug lmao - try IMP make your own merc, rename and in-game it is "This is not a UTF-8 string <CODE blablalba" (bug, because that string is SUPER annoyingly stretching over 30% of the screen lmao)

Guess making your IMP is not supported

Played xcom and other squad based games but never JA, so this is my first JA. So far 1hr into it I am liking it. I have to untrain myself from the xcom 2 controls, as I made some poor resulting mouse clicks due to that. But that's a "me" problem and not a game issue. Overall the game seems pretty polished and most of the VA is well done and entertaining. Not a fan of the no % to hit scores TBH. Still trying to figure out how you know the level of success on a potential shot. Even with the help tips enabled lots of things are not clear. But those minor issues aside I am liking my time with it and glad I pre-ordered.

Jagged Alliance 1 was one of my first PC Big box games. I remembered getting the CD from PC-Gamer with the demo on it and playing it for hours. I've played all the series in the game since, but aside from JA:2 and kinda Wildfire, most of the games released later have been mediocre at best. I thought that JA:Rage was JA:3 due to the close release for PC but thank god I was wrong. This game seems more like a true sequel to the franchise. My only beef with it so far is my favourite (and near useless) merc "Unusually Ruthless" Reuben is missing with such classic lines as:

"I see communist pig on team. I go. I fix problem."

or

"I spit at you!"

Written laws are like spiders' webs; they will catch, it is true, the weak and poor, but would be torn in pieces by the rich and powerful.

All presented through an Expendables filter.

You can make an IMP with regular letters, it works really well.
Making an IMP named with weird UTF-8 characters may not be ATM.

The first is forgotten to history, largely, but I adored it.
The 1.5 is actually lost to history, and for good reason. It was an expansion that took the strategic component out for single screen missions, and added multiplayer that just didn't work well.
The second still has an active mod community, despite not having official mod support, and is an all-time classic.
