Steam Desktop Update

Steam announces the rollout of a Steam Desktop Update with some significant changes to the client. Under the hood, this features a new framework and foundation to support quicker implementation of future changes and new features. It also includes visibility and usability improvements, improved notifications, a new in-game overlay, the new notes feature, and more. Also, macOS and Linux hardware acceleration are now supported, making for a snappier experience. This trailer explains things further. Here's more:
New framework, new foundation
The most impactful changes in this update aren’t immediately visible; much of the work went into changing how we share code across the Steam Desktop Client, Big Picture mode, and Steam Deck. These changes also means quicker implementation and iteration of new features. For example, many of the features in this update (like Notes in the overlay) are simultaneously shipping on Steam Deck because of the shared codebase.

Steam gets a fresh coat of paint
This update also brings targeted visual and usability improvements across Steam - we've gone through and updated dialogs, menus, fonts, and colors. The main Steam header and footer, Settings, and the Screenshot Manager are just a few examples of spots with refreshed UI.

It's always been like that, the option to set a specific page as the startup one was available before this beta.

There is also a fun new issue - you can't close steam via taskbar right click anymore. Which is just... mindblowing - I know that seems like a stupid thing, but I sometimes DON'T want steam running
Yeah you can, it's still there for me.

If Steam would spend half the effort they are from this GUI remake into either chucking old Pre-Windows 10 games that don't work, fixing them so they work, or clearly labeling them as "Only works on Pre-Win 10 machines", my opinion of them might improve.
Steam's not responsible for you not reading system requirements lol

Er, of course they did not remove that... In fact, I have noticed somewhat of the opposite issue there, where they offer the option within the 'Taskbar Preferences' at the bottom of the interface settings menu to disable that, but it doesn't work for me. So the bare minimum taskbar right-click menu I can have is shortcuts for the last five games played and exit. I have occasionally seen that menu render behind the actual Windows taskbar, though, which could potentially obscure the lower-most option of 'Exit Steam.'

Well that's just stupid oversight then, if I click upper most pixel of the icon I get the option barely shown... great So probably an issue with their UI scaling option for 1440p

While I'm sad that I've lost the skin I've been using for over a decade the update seems mostly okay. It doesn't seem to remember the tab you were on when you close it anymore though so any time I open it up from the tray it goes to the store instead of back to my library. I assume most of the problems will be ironed out over time and so long as it doesn't get in my way I don't mind much.

Under settings - Interface - Start Up Location - > There will be multiple options, you can choose to start on library, among other options...there. Hope that helps.
Thanks for that, and while I'd still rather it worked like it used to this is a significant improvement over loading the store every time.

The Steam update isn't bad. I am a bit surprised at my lack of things to complain about. I might even prefer the new overall look. I am not sure yet, but I am leaning that way.

edit: also, the ability to pin a steam window on a game screen with a cstomizable transparency scale is pretty damn nice. Particularly for desktop users with one monitor and people on laptops.

Ahh, spoke too soon. If you don't already have Steam running in the background launching a game will open a Steam window. That didn't happen before. Bastards.

lol this. My associated email address that I haven't used or opened in about 17 years. Last I was in there, it had so much spam and virus looking emails, I should of just disabled it, lol. Steam is literally, the only thing keeping that email alive to this day and I wish I could link my Steam ID to a modern email. I mean, I know my email preferences are going to my current email, but the actual Steam login ID.

It's just your username for login, you can change the email associated with your account.
For some reason I did the same thing when Steam first became a thing, might've been a requirement at the time, but I've long since switched emails.

Seconded. My Steam ID/email address is from a provider in another country who I haven't had an account with since the early 2000s. I don't even think the domain is valid anymore.

I haven't even had access to my Steam login ID email in over 17 years, so I don't think you need to keep that email alive.

I was stupid enough to use an email address with my ISP when Steam first became a thing. I left that ISP about a year later and Steam wouldn't let me change the Steam ID, just the official email associated with the account -- which is obviously more important.

Now nearly two decades later I still have to login with that ancient email address as my ID, but I don't think it matters. It's basically just a username that happens to look like an email address. I've tried contacting Steam support a couple of times over the years about this, but they've never been able to do anything about it.
