Out of the Blue

The air purifier I ordered arrived yesterday, a day earlier than expected. But the haze and smell from the smoke condition were already gone. The device's air quality meter confirmed this. It rated our AQ as "good" to start, which quickly graduated to "very good" after running it for a short time. We're happy with the improvement and pleased to have a filter running. I've mentioned MrsBlue's asthma in the past, which makes this seem like a sensible purchase. Naturally, some of the smoke that left our area is now causing problems elsewhere, so I hope you're being safe if you're in its path.

Cutter has sent a couple of other links. I've never explicitly offered, but he should know from experience here that he would not need to "work his way back into good graces." I don't hold many grudges, and all most banned users need to do to get unbanned is express a willingness to better follow the forum rules. That certainly applies to him.

I miss Cutter's great posts, but don't miss his terrible ones. I'd be very happy to get the former back if it could be done without the return of the latter.

Be careful with this. If you put in a filter that is above what the motor that your furnace can handle you can easily burn out the motor. Before you put in a high rated filter, refer to see what the motor can handle...

If people get caught unprepared, anyone can easily make a very cheap, very effective air purifier on their own. Equivalent to many of those expensive HEPA ones. New York Times ran an article last year. https://tinyurl.com/ak8r64rc

Just go to the hardware store and get a furnace filter with a high MERV rating (say 11 to 13) and tape it to the side of a big fan. Make sure to tape the filter facing the right direction.

Home Depot's own brands (like Honeywell) don't always list the MERV rating but supposedly their "FPR" ratings are:
FPR 9 and 10 roughly equals MERV12
FPR 7 and 8 roughly equals MERV11
A Filtrete MPR1500 will also work.

Most others do list the MERV rating. You want a high MERV rating to catch the really tiny particles that cause most of the health issues. Sometimes during huge wildfires, they sell out. A MERV rating even down to 8 is better than nothing but 11 to 13 is needed to effectively catch the smaller stuff.

I've done this and it worked wonders.

That post is about taping the filter to a regular room fan, not about putting the filter in your furnace.

Although people could also put a decent filter in their furnace if they don't get a ridiculously high MERV rated filter ( especially 14 and above). Because, yeah, those can restrict air flow. However, the filter that is already in the furnace may already be a MERV 11 to 13 one).

The warning about air flow in furnaces is also more about doing that while heating because low air flow can mess up the balance. Running the fan on a furnace without the heat being on for a few days isn't likely to harm your furnace fan unless people put in ridiculously high MERV rated filters that aren't really designed for home use (like MERV14 and above).
