I too wanted to like this game. My crew and I played it for a while. While sometimes it's fun and brilliant, sometimes it's just a slog. It's fun with friends, but playing with randos is very hit and miss. The biggest problem is most missions are really impossible without at least three players - four ideally. The AI bots to replace the missing players are useless as they can't do the mission objectives. They're worse than L4D2 bots. I hope the new version, has good AI bot players, which should be doable with today's tech. It'd be great if you could play it alone with bots.

And no, the DLCs are not necessary. They're mostly cosmetics.

Can't remember the details now of the game's dlc controversies, but it garnered a few in its day.

It was a Steam freebie at least once as I have it in my library. But, like many games, this one has sat unloaded and unloved.

I like the Heat comparisons so I really should check it out one day.
The first Kane and Lynch had a Mann-ish vibe in some levels. It was one of those rare games where I tolerated the clunky controls because I loved the atmosphere and story. Ditto with K&L2. I'm aware most hate the franchise.

Hard pass for me. Any game forcing play with other people is not even remotely in my wheelhouse.

this game is brilliant in VR. you can truly dual wield too. You can do the heists quiet but you can only do simple jewelry store ones solo, you need a coordinated team, often entering different doors and doing different things simulataneously. That is half the fun.

DLC has been on offer so many times on humble bundle.

Find a crew and have a go, or just go loud and have a blast.

IIRC most or all of the heists actually can be done 'clean,' i.e. without alarms bringing in waves of cops. You will need an organized crew taking different roles in that process, though, for anything larger than a jewelry store smash-n-grab. A bank needs someone sneaking in and disabling security, one or two people managing the hostages, someone else opening the vault door and the individual safes within, etc. And all it takes is one or two little mistakes for the whole thing to fall apart and revert to a shoot-out.

I'm pretty sure I have this on Steam, but it either didn't work, or something was up when trying to launch it. Not sure I ever actually played it yet, lol. Don't really have much desire to either.
