Honestly, I'd rather Discord implode than Reddit. At least you can actually search for information on it. Discord is just a terrible black hole.![]()

Real shame, this, and it will be sad to see my favorite communities splinter off into other social hubs, or Discord, or IRC, or wherever. Lemmy is an option, but until it is a simple website (is it already?) to visit, it's going to be quite niche. I miss forums of old like PoE and Fark and wherever Photoshop Phriday was hosted. I imagine the path of least resistance will remain simply accessing Reddit via browser (or mobile browser) as I already do, but once they put the smack down on that, or make posting impossible except from the official app, i'll be done with it for good. I waste way too much time there as it is. That's part of its problem, its ubiquity, shadowing over every other site.
Dude Somethingawful is still around and the forums are still pretty good! I post there all of the time - Gaming, SH/SC, Auto, etc. Lowtax ended up basically screwing up his entire life and then committed suicide, very sad for everyone involved. Thankfully the site was sold off to a forum user a year or two before and it's been a lot better under his management IMO.

This stupid entitled woke style protest will pass, and Reddit will continue like nothing happened. Fewer whiners will mean better discussions on Reddit.
Adults need to grasp the fact that Reddit can do anything they want with their API, and shutting off freeloading third parties who have been leeching of Reddits servers makes sense. You want to build a business based on fire-hosing Reddits content via the API from Reddits servers, fine, but the free ride is over.
Reddit didn’t support third party apps as an act of charity. They helped drive growth, especially among power users. But, now that they’re pursuing an IPO, profit is the priority and they’re willing to absorb the bad PR to it.
It’s a business decision so you can take your woke anger somewhere else.

Jonjonz wrote on Jun 6, 2023, 06:57:Wow, you really don't understand the issue here. It's not about freeloaders, it's about them charging an absurd price, destroying the ability of ANY third party app to use their API, and this includes ones that help blind people to use it, something they've shown zero concern for in communications when people have reached out over this.

Something Awful is still around... couple of years ago they forced Lowtax to step down and turn over the site to the community moderators.

The third party API pricing is insane and I'm going to join others in keeping off reddit until they knock it off. Moderating a sub is really annoying with their shitty mobile app and it's not much fun browsing either.

Reddit is basically an interest based social network, if they go through with this I will just live without seeing a bunch of it or go seek it out elsewhere. Between Blues and a few other forums covering the majority of my content interests, I usually find I'm on reddit because I'm a bit bored at that moment rather than for any compelling reason.
The answer is that it depends on what your interests are. Digg did some nonsense a long time and there was a large exodus of users to Reddit so something similar could also happen, who knows.
