I wish them luck.

They already tried, and failed.

I just read they're currently working on ANOTHER LotR game. This really pisses me off. I mean, have some respect for your subject matter. No matter who owns the license, (I think it's Embracer), there ought to be some sort of protection for Tolken's work.

Letting these clowns loose on another Rings game seems like a crime. What will the youth think of Hobbitzes??

They have to, All or parts of The Hobbit & LoTR will go into public domain soon, so they HAVE to try and milk the franchise as much as they can before that. Which is why they greenlit a game starring Gollum of all characters.

You can't cancel a game you got gov funding for <3
Also I am gonna say it.. but it's another one of those pandemic games. They also wanted to release it in 2021.....

So far, 2023 has been the Shit Shoveling year. Just Shoving shitty games and shitty ports out to the public as soon as possible.
This is just the natural evolution of people paying for alpha and beta access. Developers don't even have to finish a game to get people's money and they know it. It started with pre-purchasing special editions and now people actually PAY for "early access".

This is what you get...And the only reason why the industry doesn't collapse is probably because they figured out they can make more money giving games away for free then actually selling them. Because people have no control over their microtransaction purchases. At least you can't release a f2p game that sucks and expect to make money. Unless, you're Activision/Blizzard and have millions of fan boys.

I'm fine with that if they admit that. I bought Shadows of Doubt when it went Early Access. It was a fun but not bug free game. But when I fell through the floor to my death I was not mad, I knew I bought into an early access title.

But as you mention now we just are the beta testers. Hell not even that. We pay them for the privilege of testing their games.

Homeworld 3 delayed so they can make sure it works on launch day. thats a positive in my books.

There is a point ya blame the developers and a point where ya blame the publishers. What's the ratio of blame to each on this title?

I really enjoyed Shadow of Mordor. The second one was OK, it got a bit too 'busy' with gameplay mechanics but I wouldn't call it a POS.

In our estimation it's more cost effective to crowdsource user/betatesting than to delay release and user/betatest in house.

First three are only published by Daedalic. The Deponia series was developed in-house. And, yes, was quite good.

Daedalic has a very strong line up of several adventures and with Blackguard two solid entries in the TBS genre. Gollum was just WAY out of their sphere of competence.

I don't mean to say that their other games are bad, Barotrauma, Unrailed, Shadow Tactics and Deponia are good game. But they are not games from a huge franchise that has fans around the world used to high quality AA or even AAA games with tons of eye-candy, entertaining gameplay and big studios / publishers behind them. On top of that "Gollum" really is not that an awesome character or part of the whole LotR lore. Yes he plays a role in the fellowship and a bit earlier on but that's it. What we saw in the movies was already "peak Gollum" and even there no body really loved the character, or maybe few did IDK but it's not Legolas, Aragorn or Gimli we are talking about here. He is not heroic and looks fugly.

They should not have gone for the big cookie that was offered and let others choke on it.

This is beyond saving. It is not just bugs - it really is the gameplay itself. You can watch SkillUp's and ACG's reviews of the game if you want to know more about that.

maybe the license fee was charged on a sliding scale? like hey guys, we can't afford to license a game based on numenor or whatever, but we can probably get the gollum or tom bombadil license!

but who knows. i personally can't imagine an entire team enthusiastically wanting to make a video game where the player takes on the role of fucking gollum but anything's possible.
