Out of the Blue

Okay, I have to swear off takeout food for a while after picking up yet another case of food poisoning! This one seemed pretty bad, and I thought I might "call in sick" this morning. That's pretty unprecedented, so you know it was severe. Thankfully I turned a corner quickly, and I feel fine now. But this was extreme for a while, and after a few recent bouts in rapid succession, I need to give my poor system a break.

Systemic Round-up

My digestive system has definitely gone downhill in the last decade. Eventually i started keeping a diary of what I ate, then i slowly narrowed it down to certain foods or spices... two of my worst offenders are black pepper and soy sauce!
But this makes it hard to eat out, as you never know what they add to their dishes... and pepper is used quite extensively.

So maybe a food diary could also be in order, especially if you have bloating and slight stomach discomfort after certain meals.

Blue, have you considered going plant-based? I used to LOVE cooking steaks and all kinds of chicken dishes, but since I stopped consuming meat, I feel much healthier, more energetic, and I've yet to clog a toilet. 🤣 I don't really miss animal products, as there are tons of great alternatives these days, and I can't remember the last time food made me feel sick, unless I added a ton of spice or something, but at least it wasn't a pathogen. 🙂

I don't think the problem is the food. Food poisoning is somewhat rare in the States these days.
I'm not ruling out the idea that it's something else. It does seem odd for this to happen so often in such a short span. But I don't think the statistics support the "somewhat rare" assessment:

Every year, an estimated 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases.

https://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/food-poisoning.html

16% is "somewhat rare" in my book.

I've had food poisoning once in my entire life and I have eaten off of some seriously sketch food trucks, vendors, and carts all over the world. Yay for an aggressively grumpy constitution, I guess.

Yes, and the FDA has been cracking down lately. There has been a wave of restaurants getting shutdown for health-related violations in several major cities over the past 6 months or so

I mentioned gallstones because I experienced frequent pain like food poisoning before seeking medical help. I even added the restaurants I suspected as the cause to my "never-patronize-again" list (which I have since removed). I just thought you could benefit from my painful experience.

Like I said, the restaurant/take-out food industry in the US is weird right now. Most places I go (and many I've gone to in the past) are almost double the cost while the quality has gone down. I don't understand it. I'd eat out 3 - 4 times per week pre-pandemic whether it be dining or take-out, but lately it has been once per week at the most. I just feel better cooking my own food these days

As we get older we may have issues with:
- IBS (which may be a symptom of the conditions below)
- not able to produce enough acid (this may tie in to gallbladder issues in some way)
- gut microbes unbalanced, which could make us more prone to food poisoning (interestingly, most people I know get food poisoning in Mexico, but after enough visits it seems to go away...).
- gallbladder issues (not enough bile)

A couple of months ago I was having issues with digestion (bloatedness, gas, acid reflux - where the latter can actually be a symptom of not enough stomach acid(!!!)), so as an experiment I started taking Betaine HCL capsules. In theory, it stimulates the production of HCL in the stomach. I especially had issues with fattier foods like bacon and broth.

Anecdotally (of course) it seemed to help and then I stopped taking the pill once my symptoms disappeared after 2 weeks. Heck, for all I know, the HCL production killed off a potential H. Pylori infection. Or it could have gone away on its own. Although I did notice that the pill had an immediate effect. :-shrug-:

It'd be worth to visit a doctor just in case. Just in general after food poisoning, don't take it lightly. I got hit with a severe one 20+ years ago and it took me nearly to a grave and the first symptoms came after 3 days - by day 6 I was nearly dead and rushed to hospital emergency room. Since then I NEVER eat anything that is just laying openly around anywhere. No buffets for me........

And you know what the real kicker was? It was candy from a bowl during GamesCom (forgot what it was called back then... cebit? - not even joking. Learned a hard life lesson.... never again since then though.

Blue, you may be experiencing gallstones, as the pain can resemble that of food poisoning. If possible, I suggest getting your blood work done and specifically checking the bilirubin numbers. Elevated levels could indicate a possible blockage in the common bile duct caused by a or many stones.

He has a point, Blue. My Dad had gallstones, and yeah it can feel like you ate something bad. Blood test will settle that if the doc orders the correct one. Pretty easily removed nowadays. My Dad had them removed as an outpatient in the hospital with laproscopic surgery. He was up and out the door in a couple of hours (at age 95) with just a couple of small incisions.

Good possibility,.. but I was also going to mention the other thing that no one wants to hear...
Getting older!
I have noticed that all kinds of foods I once loved were causing me issues. I kept thinking it must have been made poorly or a bug going around, or IBS ,..etc...etc...
finally had some tests done - Doc said it's just my body changing & can't handle certain foods anymore. Diet change forced upon me due to age.

Yep, in my 50s I needed to be careful with my foods, fats started to play havok with my digestive system and I needes to watch my salts. Ive always been sporty so am fairly athletic but my diet was a but shit. In my 60s ive now have to be careful with too much iron and really watch the salts A more balanced diet and not too much broccoli and kale - this was the killer for me, I love kale lightly fried in olive oil with capers, onions, mushrooms, peppers and a bed of chopped tomatoes with basil. Feel free to add some bacon or beef, either goes well (both are bad for you of course)

mmmm, hungry now.
