Out of the Blue

California-based In-N-Out Burger poised for major expansion (thanks Ant). This is pretty exciting news. I love me a good burger, and the west coast has it all over the east in this area. We had a breakthrough years ago when Fatburger opened nearby. But this location did not last long enough to even earn one free burger from getting my loyalty card punched. Now the closest Fatburger in the area is hours away in New Jersey, and nobody loves burgers that much. Anyway, with no details on where In-N-Out plans to open locations on this coast, I'll keep tabs on this and keep my fingers crossed.

In-N-Out Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

Funny you mention burgers in Copenhagen. I'm going there in July - doing a few days in Berlin (and catching Depeche Mode there), then a food tour of Copenhagen. We're doing Noma, but the chefs from Noma also started a burger joint called POPL that I can't wait to try.

I can not explain how insanely jealous I am. What an amazing time of year to be in Denmark!! Should be gorgeous.

I was talking about the scientific fact that large herds of cattle need space, i.e. one huge factor is deforestation. The second scientific fact is that large herds of cattle (or every individual cow/bull for that matter ) produce significant amounts of methane which is many times more damaging than carbon dioxide.

A simple lifestyle change by eating no or considerably less beef would help a lot to reduce these issues. Less demand = less cows = less emissions and deforestation. I'm not too surprised, however, that people in MAGA land (the US of A), the world capital of burger-munching, are ignorant of these facts Wink .

In n Out isn't my fav burger place either.

That would be a small chain back east called Tom Wahls. If I ever win the lottery I'm going to see if I can open one of those out west.

All of that said...I am pretty sure the best burger I ever had was at the Hard Rock Cafe in Copenhagen. I had not had an american hamburger in 3 years when I went there for the first time so I am not sure if it was really that good or if I was just that starved for a hamburger...but either way...Hard Rock has a decent burger. Red Robin has a good burger, so does TGIFs. If we are going to go "hole in the wall", there is a place in a small town called Laytonville in Mendocino county, California. It's called The Chief, as its located right near a Native American reservation. The owner of the place is a beef cattle rancher and one of the herds are visible from the windows of the place. The meat anything is AMAZEBALLS. Burger? AMAZEBALLS. Brisket sandwich? AMAZEBALLS. BRUGER WITH BRISKET? AMAZEBALLS.

Red Robin is just Five Guys in better clothing, to me. Only ate there once. Never again for me, ha. Any restaurant too focused on toppings is hiding something to me.

So weird how so many of you think Five Guys fries are good. To me they are the worst part of the experience. Over the top greasy and completely flimsy like overcooked asparagus. Terrible. If they cooked them right and drained them properly afterwards they would be so much better because I like the fact that they don't skin them and the cut size is fantastic. Salt is is right amount normally as well. The burgers are the highlight to me, and I appreciate that they have multiple sauce options. I don't like ketchup on anything, let alone a burger.

We have a chain in California called "The Habit" that has recently started expanding quite quickly after initially being limited to the Santa Barbara area and working up the coast line. Top 5 chain burger IMHO. Easily. Fries to match. I ask for my fries well done everywhere but I dont need to at the Habit. They have tempura green beans..which is weird..but they are amazing. Really good onion rings. Fantastic salads if thats your thing. Excellent variety in the burger and chicken sandwiches and seasonal stuff as well. I get the Santa Barbara Char with fries and an ice tea...as their ice tea options are decent as well.

I don't make burgers at home much these days so when I do I go for the full cardiac arrest causing, coronary blockage causing, blood thinner requiring experience. I like 2x big patties and thin sliced toasted sourdough bread. I use this mayo sauce I make with garlic mayo I get locally, because I live in garlic land, and some of that chipotle tobasco. Dill pickle slice or 2, avocado, and grilled onions, top it with an over easy fried egg and some bacon. I am not a cheeseburger person generally, but I hit it with pepper jack if I am feeling spicy. The egg will already have have been hit with the same tobasco that is in the sauce, so its tingly but not "BAM" hot. I don't use anything really hot in my normal cooking. My insides cant handle it any longer. Too bad really because there is lot more variety in hot sauces on the store shelves theses days and I like to eperiment with stuff.

I can't stand Five Guys. Overcooked, and more a focus on toppings than meat. Great fries, though.

Around here, decent burgers are rare. Not rare as in cooked, just rare to find. Most burger joints are just gross, and the patties have that frozen, pre-formed texture. How can you be a burger joint doing that? This area swears it's the best food in the nation ut I'd rate it so far down. The only thing going for it is few chains, but they can't be any worse.

I prefer my burgers, which are juicy as anything. Shake Shack is great, as I'm not doing smash burgers, and it's the best thing to eat at Newark Airport. There's also a Korean BBQ (as in brisket and kimchi, not actual Korean cuisine) that does an amazing burger. Otherwise, I hold off unless I'm in NYC.

Well that's your problem right there.
Guys Guys is an overpriced imitation of Four Guys burgers.
I myself prefer Good Guys.

But all seriousness aside, a small Burger joint opened up out of a house in my town about a year ago. Take out only. There's only two things on the menu, cheeseburgers or grilled cheese sandwich. They use local meats, vegetables and specialty cheeses plus they bake their own sourdough buns. You don't get a choice of lettuce and tomato, only chopped red onions and sweet/hot pickles. They don't serve french fries but you get a small mixed green salad with a tiny cup of of the house vinaigrette.
It's the only cheeseburger you eat where you feel healthier afterwards
I still giggle when I burp salad after eating a burger from there.

They're only open 3 days a week and I try to hit'em at least 2 or 3 times a month.
Environment be damned Wink

*EDIT* More on topic, yeah In-n-Out is overrated, shitty fries. As far as "small chain" burger joints, I strongly prefer Five Guys in comparison, but yes, their prices have gone through the roof. Oh well. I have noticed more local quality burger joints starting to pop up here and there, to compete with the 'luxury burger' places, and they are starting to get pretty good.

Their Cajun fries are delicious and I have in the past ordered a large fry and fed 4 people with it and had leftovers.

In-and-Out burgers are pretty good. Their burgers aren't gonna blow you away, but they are worth a try.

The worst part of their menu are the French Fries. Someone mentioned on this forum that you have to order the fries "medium well done." If you don't, the fries are very undercooked.

Again, their burgers are pretty decent, just not the best fast food burger I've ever had.

I do like In and Out but definitely feel like it's super overrated as well. I just moved back to the east coast from the west coast and see the east also has Five Guys which is so much better than In & Out. Plus, Five Guys out west at least usually wasn't nearly as busy yet In & Out always had a huge line of cars pretty much no matter the time of day. But, am not going to argue if they want to move out to the east. I usually got a cheeseburger "Monster Style" and fries "light well",

I'd mostly agree with that synopsis. Nice idea, only implemented in a mediocre manner. I'm sure some would complain it is filled with standard stereotypes and tropes.
