Mostly yes, but at the same time, he's saying it's unfair to judge someone going to a political conference for the politics of the conference. There are dozens if not hundreds of sci-fi conventions. This one is a political one. I'd argue it's politics first, sci-fi second.
That said, I read the Starship Grifters series, or at least two books, a ways back. Really enjoyed the first book. If I recall, I think the second was a step down, but I don't really recall.
