Tells you all you need to know?

BasedCon will run for its third year this September, at a hotel in Michigan. The event's exact location is not public for security reasons, its website states.

Mostly yes, but at the same time, he's saying it's unfair to judge someone going to a political conference for the politics of the conference. There are dozens if not hundreds of sci-fi conventions. This one is a political one. I'd argue it's politics first, sci-fi second.

That said, I read the Starship Grifters series, or at least two books, a ways back. Really enjoyed the first book. If I recall, I think the second was a step down, but I don't really recall.

Carmack is still one of the best in the indusry, I've cared way less about QuakeCon since his absence.

His legacy is second to none with what he did pushing to open source early id Tech engines (Doom/Quake). They are kept alive bettter than any games in history. Even now there are still new maps, mods, ray tracing, Vulkan, etc. added for those games for that reason.

He may be a legend, but his last significant technical contribution was almost 20 years ago.

Sometimes good sci fi can come from people with abhorrent politics. Like Ender's Game.

How much does Carmack get paid for this event?

I want to know how much he considers himself worth to be sold to an in-your-face posturing demographic that makes him feel a little uncomfortable.

I think Carmack's perspective is vastly different than everyone else's. He thinks this convention is sci-fi first and not political at all. But everyone else sees this as a political convention first, and sci-fi second. i.e. You are not going to see many sci-fi people who aren't aligned with the convention's politics. He doesn't see it because he is of those people; people who are also the same ones that make him uncomfortable. He doesn't think twice that his "libertarian" demographic didn't include "black lives matter" in that list of "absolute truths", because apparently: this is who John Carmack has been all along.

It seems so harmless right? That's what makes watching the more narrow minded liberals of the site fall over themselves classifying this as the same as gassing Jews or dragging homosexuals behind their pick up truck so goddamn funny.

John is so intelligent but naive at the same time.
No doubt that this taints his image, sad, maybe he doesn't care.

There is a culture war with a side much more calculating and ethics free than the other.

Clearly willing and able to kill the infirm, the old, the different, the hungry, and mothers and born children for its objectives.

Sorry, but talking about something with real life suffering as "eternally entertaining and utterly pointless" seems so deluded.

I think you could add that it's a "far right" political convention for fans of scifi and it would be an even closer fit.

I've been called deluded before. No skin off my nose. I'm waiting for someone to explain the "Real life suffering" being caused by attending a stupid convention that doesn't involve ludicrous leaps in logic. So far it feels like I'm watching something on the level of 'Police Squad' or 'Spaceballs'.

OMFG, I remember watching that skit live like a million years ago. Good that you posted it here. Lots of people need to lighten the fuck up.

Prez, don't you really get it man ?

** Don't support with your presence/fame those that cheer or don't care enough to inform themselves about consequences or suffering **.

Just one of their points:
- Anti-abortion: women are dying of untreatead infections or complications of ectopic pregnancies, or carrying dead or dying fetuses.

- Backstreet abortions for those who can barely sustain themselves even single.
Or say goodbye to studies or work at an early age.
Or were raped by strangers or relations.

- Forcing births in families with no prospect of a stable roof or even food for the children.
With republicans sinking medical attention and paid related infirmities, school meals, early caring.

- Forcing children to have children with physical and mental damage.

- Etc !

No doubt, a lot of people don't give a shit.
So America is one of the worst first world countries to live in, if you are not privileged or lucky.

All of you attacking John Carmack for wanting a non-leftist or political leaning writing is pretty silly, your stretching the truth and grasping at straws. Let him do his thing and you do your thing, he is not attacking you for your beliefs.

I'm not deluded. At least I don't think I am. I agree with everything you said about abortion. The difference between you and me, I think, is that I don't connect the dots between someone believing something I don't and thinking they are causing the deathly serious affects that you laid out easily. I don't know what else to say except that sometimes a convention is just a convention. The way to go about changing people's views for the betterment of society is not by demonizing the one's who get it wrong.
