Overwatch 2 Hero Mode Cancelled

Blizzard conducted a developer chat livestream today to lay out the 2023 roadmap for Overwatch 2. This revealed the cancellation of the planned Hero Mode for the first-person shooter sequel. This PvE mode was a main justification for announcing Overwatch 2 as a replacement for the original Overwatch. The explanation takes some interesting turns. A lot of work is already invested in Hero Mode, which is described as "amazing content," "awesome missions," and "new enemies that are super fun to fight." The bad news is that this is not coming together the way it was envisioned, and with no end in sight, it is being abandoned. The conversation reveals a mode called Starwatch that will still bring some PvE into the mix. An interview on GameSpot has thoughts from game director Aaron Keller and executive producer Jared Neuss on the news, and what PvE elements are still coming to the game. "I think I would characterize it slightly differently, which is we are doing part of what the team had set out to do, but not the entirety of what was discussed back at BlizzCon 2019," explains Keller. "So the real focus is on the story missions and that experience as opposed to the more open-ended hero mode and that stuff." Keller and Neuss joined the developer stream to break the news. Here's word from Jared Neuss:
But at the same time, development on the PvE experience really hasn't made the progress that we would have hoped. The team has created a bunch of amazing content, so there's awesome missions that are really exciting. There's brand new enemies that are super fun to fight, and some truly great and ridiculous hero talents. But, unfortunately, the effort required to pull all of that together into a Blizzard-quality experience that we can ship to you is huge. And there really is no end in sight or defined end date where we can put that out into the world.

And so we are left with another difficult choice. Do we continue to pour all that effort into PvE, hoping we can land it at some point in the future? Or do we stick with this set of values that we have aligned on and focus on the live game and focus on serving all of you? With everything we have learned about what it takes to operate this game at the level that you deserve, it's clear that we can't deliver on that original vision for PvE that was shown in 2019. What that means is that we won't be delivering that dedicated Hero Mode with talent trees, that long-term talent power progression. Those things are just not in our plans anymore. And we know that this is going to be disappointing to many of you which is why we wanted to bring it up before we talk about the road map. And to be perfectly honest it's been really difficult for many of us and a lot of folks on the team who poured their heart and soul into that stuff.

You're both right, Source:

  • New players initially can only access 13 of the 35 heroes in Overwatch 2.
  • players must complete around 150 games to eventually have every character from the original game unlocked.
  • [new OW2 heroes] all require special gameplay challenges to unlock (if you missed the battle pass opportunity)
  • also Players that missed out can buy the previously-released heroes using Overwatch coins.

If you don't play the game often, and cannot "invest" more time into the game, it would feel like the heroes are locked behind a pay wall.

But if you play the game so little, you probably aren't proficient with the heroes you already have, and don't have time to learn the new ones anyways. This also means your rank is low in Competitive matches and the strategic disadvantage of not owning certain heroes to counter your opponents, is less relevant.

This is not accurate. No one has to pay to get new characters. I haven't paid a cent and I have them all. You have to pay if you want access to them day one of release. Which doesn't really matter cause it takes a couple weeks for them to be available in ranked. They're not hard to unlock. Additionally, you can get a "free" battle pass every other season if you complete weekly quests.

This also is inaccurate. The only way to get new heroes for free is to progress through the battlepass to rank 45 (or thereabouts) - so if you take a break or don't play often then you might not earn enough EXP to unlock them. If you take a longer break, or are a new player, you'll miss battlepass seasons entirely and have no choice but to pay if you want those heroes.

Like every other "Live Service" game, OW2 relies on FOMO to make players too scared to stop playing, rather than making the game so fun that they want to keep playing.

Do you know how to read? Every statement of mine that you quoted was 100% accurate. They're not even debatable. Just facts. Therefore my statements were "accurate". Yours however, were not.

Not every live service game, Deep Rock Galactic does seasons right. You can play to unlock everything during the current season (and there is a LOT of time to do so even if you only play casually) and if for some reason you don't or can't, all of the unlocks become available in the next seasons through regular unlock methods.

Hero mode was what was supposed to set apart Overwatch from Overwatch 2, they were stringing us along for over a year. Now Overwatch 2 really is Overwatch 1.5 at best.

Does Overwatch 2 have issues? OH YEAH! This PVE decision likely dooms the entire game. If anyone thinks Blizzard is a company you can buy games from, you're crazy. The Blizzard you knew, died many years ago. They haven't released a good game in a VERY long time. Diablo IV is going to be a disaster too. GET READY.

It is a shame because they have incredible art and engineering departments. Big corpa greed will never allow them to release a desirable product again, unfortunately. Although, their design teams were eroding(Diablo III anyone?!) before big corpa swooped in for the kill. I'm not sure they would have made competent products without the greed.

Agreed. My issue with Overwatch is that it's something that came from a story and character-driven MMO project and it was turned into a team shooter where story and character interactions can't really happen. (e.g. Why have "good guys" and "bad guys" if they can just all fight each other?) It has all of these wonderfully designed and presented characters and nothing to tie them to. I know next to nothing about these characters or their stories or their world... but I really want to. I was looking forward to (and waiting to buy until) the PVE part coming out hoping that it would deliver this to some extent. Without that, I don't care about anything in this game or its "world." Team shooters work best when the "characters" are just archetypes (soldier, engineer, sniper, medic, etc.) This is only partly the case in OW as it hilariously sticks to the MMO trinity of tank/heal/dps... but even that feels like an afterthought.

The other problem is that this just exacerbates the issue of it not really being a sequel. The addition of new elements like PVE/Story/whatever might have been able to justify it being presented as a true sequel. Without them, it just validates all the people who call it Overwatch 1.1 cause that's what it is.

Terrible decision. A big part of this game's appeal is the setting and characters, and story-based single-player content could do wonders to revitalise it.

They had to wait until they were about to do another major release to put this out there so people will get distracted and forget about it.

One of the biggest FU's out of this whole thing is that they knew they could not do the planned aspects of the PvE mode over a year ago and sat on the scrapping of it while simultaneously and continuously promoting the hell out of it as 'still coming'. Not even a peep out of them until now about "how hard it was" to do.

That and the reasoning behind OW2's existence and OW1's reduction of active development were all for the systems for this mode.

I would've had far more respect for them if they came out and said "We've decided not to pursue the promised PvE aspect because we found we couldn't monetize it like our current model", at least then it would be far more realistic and believable than "it's too much work".

I do find it funny, if not a little ironic, that this is the exact opposite you'd see as a problem in gaming lately...usually, it's a lack of PvP options as the reason a game 'dies'.

The thing I don't like is that Overwatch 2 doesn't exist beside the original - it replaced it. I once again have basically nothing for the money I spent to buy the game back in 2017. You want to stop supporting the first? Fine - just allow modding of the original and focus on the second. I know why they don't though. Likely modders could make the original far better than the second one could ever be. The embarrassment would be drastic.

Probabably the only mode that would have gotten me interested in playing again. I love the characters and gameplay, but the pvp balance and reliance on meta and countering other characters turned me off.

Why bother? I assume they are making plenty of money with the sequel. People call it version 1.5 but it doesn't really even get that much credit. I'd say maybe version 1.3.
