I am weak and bought the game. It took about 45 minutes for it to do the cache dance.
I played almost two hours and just sent in a refund request, not because of crashes but because my mobile 6gb 3060 is not up to the task of displaying the level of graphic fidelity this game deserves.
oh well, it was worth a try

That Digital Foundry vid is exactly what I was seeing. Medium textures are not good.

Its definitely odd reading some of the user reviews. Most of the specs I have seen people post fall within the minimum to recommended specs. Only one negative review I read posted their stats that clearly only met the minimum for low settings, an old Ryzen Zen 2 and Radeon 5000, that clearly should have known better. I'm betting if people at least selected DX11 instead of 12 (if it's an option in the menu), that might help in the mean time.

DX12 is also coming out with updates that will make it easier for the cpu and gpu to communicate and share a pool of VRAM, which should improve things greatly once devs can utilize it. Some engines are also adding the ability for Devs to pre-compile like in Unreal 5. Right now this stuff is likely to be encountered in other games released this year with the growing pains of new tech.

Now that the game is mostly patched up and they've promised more patches, it doesn't appear to be as big a disaster as some need it to be.
Looking at steam, around March 31st it went from negative to positive.
It's good to see improvements. However, the score from 3/31 onward is "Mixed" at 61%; not yet positive.

rankings don’t mean anything. there are probably millions of people playing this game which means you are going to have a lot of people have problems. And they are going to be complaining. Since this is naughty dog, its going to get reported on by youtubers just for the clicks. And then the brigading happens, which is a combination of people with a problem, or people that hated last of us two, or people that feel the game should’ve been 40 bucks.
A score means something and has word-of-mouth value. If 1,000 people say something is terrible, that doesn't make them wrong because they're not the majority. However, with this game, they are the majority. The overwhelming chorus of negativity is ubiquitous online (not just on Steam).

An upgrade to what from 2080 Ti? I have been checking the Radeon 7900XT/XTX and RTX40 series through the last couple weeks and stocks are for the most part available. The base 4070 Ti variants (MSRP $799 versions, like the ASUS TUF) is the one right now that tends to go out of stock within a day of new ones readily available from online stores more so than the 4080 or 4090. The cheapest version of the 7900XT has one from ASRock that is also readily available. You might have the most luck if you have a MicroCenter where you live.

There is also the option of buying used on eBay like the 3090 which tends to sell for $100 less than the 4070 Ti.

i would have upgraded to the 3090ti, but now I am holding out for a 4090ti, if the rumor is true, or a 4090.

Yeah, I agree with this. It was crazy watching the steam version just fall off in the new and trending category so quickly due to all the bad reviews from users and journalists. RE4 remake took back its spot within a day. I think for such a big expectation, it has to stir up something in Sony.

As for the game, I do eventually want to play it, but as with all these half-baked releases nowadays, I will wait until it's fully patched.
Too funny, I did not know of that clip before this either.

Yep. They are going to eventually learn this.

100% will not learn BEFORE consumers learn to STOP BUYING PREDICTABLY SHODDY PORTS ON DAY 1.

NO ONE should be remotely surprised by this.

While some buy day one on these stinkers, not enough are and those low scores are killing sales after that day 1 sale. We've seen plenty of reports of games under-performing sales wise where they had major day 1 issues. It seems like a pretty easy pattern to spot, will the publishers/dev catch on? I think in time, yeah, because these are big losses for them, not enough consumers are buying the shoddy ports.

Same! My computer is pushing five years old this year too, sure it's basically a HPC but whatever's, just stop being all poor. I wish it has fullscreen, it appears none of the new games support fullscreen anymore.

anyways. I think to many people think their shit hardware is the shit. Sure you can build a computer for under a grand, but you end up with a computer that has the processing power of a computer that dosent even cost a grand.

I read the shaders take like 90 minutes to compile. took me like 15-20 minutes I think.
Um too not “to.”
Comment totally unreadable unplayable.

The number of “gamers” is >1 who set the game to Ultra and pressed play at the first moment they could get to video options.
And then complained when it crashed and would not work on their Nvidia MX500.

completed it for you, congrats, no envy (grrrr).

Really?! Mmm, you may have got something there ...

Old man grumbling: "This reminds me of those smug low ping bastards of yesteryear." Bigcry

That's hilarious!

Add me to the list of people that have had no problems with the game on PC (aside from the absurdly long shader compilation time) after the 3/30/2023 patch. I didn't bother trying to play the literal day one before that patch, but since then, no problems with the game, aside from wanting a mod that makes melee weapons unbreakable.

That presumably means the company didn't send out free game codes to critics.

Not free, just advance.
Major outlets usually have 1-3 weeks advance to do reviews. That didn't happen here, so they've had the game less than a week. It's a 14-22 hour game. That means that a reviewer basically had Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday to finish it if they largely marathon, and are now working on writing.

Seems reasonable
