ESA on Canceling E3

There's an interview on GamesIndustry.biz talking with ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis about the news that E3 2023 has been cancelled. The conversation covers how the changing industry landscape over the years has affected the show and what led to this point. Discussing why this year's show was cancelled leads to this assessment: "First, several companies have reported that the timeline for game development has been altered since the start of the COVID pandemic. Second, economic headwinds have caused several companies to reassess how they invest in large marketing events. And third, companies are starting to experiment with how to find the right balance between in-person events and digital marketing opportunities." Pierre-Louis says the E3 does not economically impact the ESA's industry advocacy, which will continue as before. Whether or not E3 will return in some form in the future is less definitive. Several questions touch on this, but none generate a definitive answer. Here's word for now on E3 2024:
We're committed to providing an industry platform for marketing and convening but we want to make sure we find that right balance that meets the needs of the industry. We're certainly going to be listening and ensuring whatever we want to offer meets those needs and at that time, we will have more news to share.

I always thought the main function of computer game trade shows was to sell retail buyers on stocking a game publishers new games. It has been years since most new games are sold online and brick and mortar sales of computer games is minimal, so I am surprised this show has lived as long as it has.

I think they are totally wrong for not having it. They and the business want it be BIG BIG BIG. ....as big as it was. Its not ever going to happen. What they should do is be humble and restart it small if they have to and build themselves up. Thats how ALL trade shows and and gaming shows and conventions started...SMAaall. Get back to the roots and then build back up. I remember when shows were tiny yet better really.

I received an email from SUMMER GAME FEST - Live June 8, 2023, with the headline, "Video Game Summer Isn't Canceled." I bet Geoff feels vindicated for calling out E3 on its legacy mindset.

"This June, SUMMER GAME FEST returns for its fourth year to give fans a preview of what’s next in video games.

Hear from the world’s top game creators, including a spectacular live showcase streaming on Thursday, June 8, hosted by Geoff Keighley from YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.

Stay tuned for more details including a calendar of partner publisher events."

Should be fun! 🌞 Dance

I mean, he's going to be delicate because he wants it to come back, but "Second, economic headwinds have caused several companies to reassess how they invest in large marketing events" is fairly close.

The big tentpole publishers realized that, with information moving quickly online, it's more efficient to hold their own events, where each release gets plenty of coverage, than have to fight each other for mindshare during the same week. A small release can eat a week of coverage in January or February, but less than 30 seconds during e3.

With respect, he seems to lack an understanding of the history of game presentations. E3 was the video game gatekeeper of all things new for a long time. But that changed with YouTube. Later, Geoff Keighley announced his leaving E3 to start Summer Game Fest and TGA, which have offered a more modern and improved format for recognizing excellence and premiering new games. I love how SGF teams up with Steam (I think EGS too) to have playable demos for announced games in near real-time.
