I guess I'm surprised that your hiring choices are scrutinized beyond your direct report. That's a crazy level of micromanagement.

This is beyond the interview stage. This is now me justifying why I picked the candidate I did where interview strength and demonstrated skillset are not relevant to the people pushing back against my selection.

And this is constant. For. Every. Single. Hire. My boss, a VP, has tried to explain to them that for what we do, the candidate pool of qualified individuals is fairly small. They just don't get it or are willfully choosing to not get it to hit some magic ratio.

It's one of the major reasons I am opting for "early" (in the view of America's rampantly diseased post-capitalism culture) retirement. I no longer want to deal with the political bullshit that constantly interferes with running a highly skilled, efficient, and effective department. I'd rather worry about when I need to cover my vegetables or corral my cattle after checking the weather than whatever the political hot potato du jour is.

Sounds great! Suppose you are interested in learning about the Bible. In that case, resources are available in your local community, including the Witnesses, who would be happy to provide a study if you choose to pursue it. Happy retirement! 🤠

Thank you for the well wishes on my retirement.

Kxmode, you have been around this site long enough to know that I am an ardent atheist.

Snagged² while BoP is solving DEI.

Ironic given that is exactly what I am fighting against today.
Are you fighting for your free-dom?

Heh, no. Just fighting to hire the best candidate regardless of whether they hit check boxes or not.
The best interview I went on is the company I currently work for. They are the most down-to-earth people I've met.

My interview went something like this:

1 What are you passionate about? Technology and especially the Internet. I genuinely enjoy how it keeps challenging me to learn new things and grow.

2 Why do you want to work for us? I like what you've built and see myself as a valuable contributor to your success. I also like your mission statement and desire to work for a company with that outlook.

3 Do you enjoy design or coding? Both, but I focus on coding.

4 We'll give you a task. Can you complete it? Sure.

* four hours later *

I'm done.

That was fast. Great. Can you start Monday? I sure can.

I have been with them for over eight years now.

Takeaways:

* Age shouldn't be a factor. Some of the best people I've worked for are in their 40s, 50s, and older.
* The person expresses a genuine passion for the work
* Their resume shows a history of staying at companies for a long time
* Give them a task (it might be tricky today with OpenAI). However, don't knock someone if they can creativity incorporate AI into their workflow.
