man i dunno. i'm not a lawyer but it sounds like a slam dunk to me. cohen pays her to keep silent; then JUST COINCIDENTALLY trump pays him back the exact same amount? nah bruh, if there's one thing regular people are good at, it seeing through other regular people bullshit. it doesn't matter where the money comes from, if the INTENT was to help his campaign, it's a campaign contribution. a very large, very illegal one. and i think cohen will be a surprisingly reliable witness. he's well spoken, and he has nothing to gain anymore. he's served his penance, and i think people will sympathetic to him unshackling himself from the chains of trump's bondage.

I've watched this like 5 times and I still bust out laughing every time 'L3ROY's' fat ass hits the pavement. I can only wonder what actually happened to his car after his involuntary exit. This should have been a Florida man clip but unfortunately his license plate says he's in Georgia.

Whether or not he slept with her has nothing to do with the case. This is not about paying her off either. There's actually nothing illegal about paying someone to keep their mouth shut. This is about HOW the money transaction was hidden, and maybe where the money came from.

The case, as I understand it (and details have not been released yet, so there MAY be more we don't know about) and again, it's obtuse enough that I'm having a hard time understanding it, so imagine a jury of 12, but the deal is that the original payment to Stormy Daniels from Cohen was claimed (by Cohen) to be a campaign contribution to Trump. Trouble is, that amount exceeds the legal amount he can donate. To try to fix that, Cohen billed Trump for the money in installments and disguised it as if it was for something else. So yeah, Cohen is guilty of several crimes.

Now even if Trump knew about all the under the table stuff (and Cohen says he did) Trump claims all he did was pay Cohen legal invoices out of his own pocket, and at most Trump MAY have committed a misdemeanor. The technicality comes in that the misdemeanor can be elevated to a criminal case under NY law if it's done in the process of hiding another misdemeanor, and legal scholars are finding this a bit of a stretch.

Now, there could be a smoking gun we don't know about. If the DA, for instance, has proof that Trump paid Cohen from campaign funds instead of his own money (that's one speculation out there) then yes, now we have a serious campaign finance crime, but that would be a federal offense and not necessarily under the purview of the NY DA, unless New York wants to file charges under State campaign finance laws, and that's also kind of thin.

The sad fact is that Cohen did a fairly good job of protecting Trump, and took the fall. The challenge now is having him convince the jury he's not testifying against Trump just because he wants to get even.

FYI: I find it hilarious that most of the people I know personally, who support Trump, believe he DID sleep with her, despite the fact that he has denied it. So these people, who love Trump, and think he's been treated unfairly, also believe he's a liar. But she has big boobs, so it's okay I guess. Curious also, that I don't think Trump has ever used the "I wouldn't sleep with her, she's not my type" defense when talking about Stormy. I guess she really IS his type

Legal experts pretty much agree it's a weak case. If you're going after a former President, and most especially Trump, you should be going in with a slam dunk. Watch LegalEagle's video last week for some of the legal issues. But in essence, anyone else would get a slap on the wrist for this. The case is going to lean heavily on Cohen's testimony, and Cohen will be crucified on cross as he has admitted to previously lying under oath. Not someone you want to hinge your case on. Not unless there's some smoking gun we don't know about.

They're going to have to convince a jury, based on a technicality in campaign law that is going to be hard for the average jurist to understand.

Hey I hope they get a conviction, but it's not a solid case.

It's a very weak case, and I think it's also an obvious political hit job, which only makes Trump a martyr. LegalEagle pretty much summed it up in his video last week.

I am more interested in the Georgia elections case. That's the one that might actually make 45 shit his pants.

I didn't either, but I suspect it's the first of several that we will see in the coming weeks. Jack Smith's cases are really the ones to watch, and hopefully the legal system comes to the correct conclusions (independent of whether the state is blue or red, or federally).
