Re: Elon Musk among experts urging a halt to AI training.

There is a segment of society that doesn't want an educated, intelligent, and informed population. They see an AI model that makes intelligence dirt cheap and easily accessible as a tool people will use to educated themselves, and this segment is afraid of losing control over the people they manipulate. They will use fear to try and get people to go against their own interests, just as they already do today.
AI will NOT help making people more independent. AI will mostly serve the laziness of people. Its a simple tool, not the salvation.
Agreed. Some students are already using ChatGPT to generate essays on any subject and it's difficult for teachers/professors to check if they're valid or not. AI will just encourage people to become lazier and more reliant on it to provide the easy answers and to do everything for them.
I think you just described a more independent person. But I guess this argument is going to boil down to semantics on the usage of the word "independent". In general, people will become more dependent on AI, but as a result, will be more independent people with respect to most other aspects of their lives. For example, instead of just being ignorant of a topic, they can more easily inform themselves without being dependent on the help of another person.

There will always be outliers and people who cheat and thus cheat themselves. But a cherry-picked example doesn't win an argument when the discussion is around the general impact of something.

I agree that it is a simple tool, not the salvation. But it will make it easier for people to learn just about anything you can think of, and I hold that a more educated person is also a more independent person. Do you disagree with the statement that a more educated person is also a more independent person? i.e. there is a positive causation-based correlation between increasing intelligence and increasing independence.

lol "Elon Musk among experts".. Among people who are self proclaimed experts (in everything)? People who have employed experts? Stupid clickbait article could use his name without implying he is any type of actual AI expert.
He was a co-founder of OpenAI.

AI will be just like the internet. A few people will utilise it to make great things and enrich their lives. Most people will use it for self indulgence and be unhappy. Just on a far bigger scale. You've seen what the TikTok generation is like... now prepare for kids/adults who grow up with AI that does pretty everything for them.

You gotta feel for analog engineers what with the proliferation of oxygen free low-noise passive aligned ferrite active quantum crystal nanoparticle reference Ethernet cables.

Elon is upset because he doesn’t own it. Any babble from him about "profound risks to society and humanity” can be translated to how much money is in it for me, he doesn’t give a fuck about society or humanity.
