NVIDIA: Crypto "Doesn't Bring Anything Useful"

An interview on The Guardian talks tech with Michael Kagan, the chief technology officer at NVIDIA. The headline quote from the story is Kagan's assertion that cryptocurrencies do not "bring anything useful for society," despite how crypto-driven demand for NVIDIA GPUs has done wonders for the company's bottom line for years. In contrast, he speaks positively about ChatGPT, saying AI is actually useful:
The first version ChatGPT was trained on a supercomputer made up of about 10,000 Nvidia graphics cards.

“All this crypto stuff, it needed parallel processing, and [Nvidia] is the best, so people just programmed it to use for this purpose. They bought a lot of stuff, and then eventually it collapsed, because it doesn’t bring anything useful for society. AI does,” Kagan told the Guardian.

“With ChatGPT, everybody can now create his own machine, his own programme: you just tell it what to do, and it will. And if it doesn’t work the way you want it to, you tell it ‘I want something different’.”

What's intelligent about wanting a relationship or wasting time having relationships with meatbags?

Why would an artificial intelligence need to emulate a human to be considered intelligent when humans are by and large, dumb as fuck?
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

I dunno, some people give their car a name. I don't, but it is interesting.
I might be wrong, but the "I" in AI seems to suggest some form of intelligence and/or a conscience.
Like you have with a pet or a partner. That could suggest that a meaningful relationship would be possible.
Maybe if they change it to "AA" (Artificial Aggregator) instead of AI, the false advertising would result in less confusion.

So ChatGPT... it seems to aggregate the interweb and provides a single answer as opposed to say a Google search that provides a list of multiple "answers". Is the single answer correct? It seems like a step back to me? Until it becomes conscious and I can have a meaningful relationship with it, it is just another search engine to me. Like having a PA do a Google search and compile the info into a useful report.

It can save time in starting a big search, but don't think about it as a search tool. Think of it as a content creation tool. It's free to try (the Bing one is better than the Google one.) Ask it to write you a poem, or a play starring two of your favorite characters from something.
And why would you want a meaningful relationship with a tool?

After the bloodbath/correction in Crypto I am sure people will be cautious until the next greed cycle happens again. The trick seems to be to get in and out at the right time which is speculation, like betting on the corrupt horse racing industry. The underlying block-chain tech is useful though for other reasons. Strange indeed Nvidia is asserting that after having profited from proof of work using their GPUs crypto has benefited them financially. Maybe the proof of stake has decreased the demand for their hardware and now they are looking forward to other use cases for their hardware, such as AI.

Edit: The thing with the latest 'AI' bandwagon that bothers me, is that the AI uses human produced articles and online knowledge to draw its conclusions. In a future where AI continues to do that and NOT draw its own conclusions, the next generation will produce less articles and knowledge to fuel it and the world will become a dumber place. Just like the 'wise' younger generation currently who feel clever when the can simply Google something as opposed to older generations where experience and life experience was valued.

I see a couple of articles saying he was tortured, but no information about any injuries he suffered. I'm leaning towards thinking the kidnapping was a sympathy play and not real. However, I could be completely mistaken. *shrug*

NV (like everyone else) sees a lot of income coming in from "AI" as the new $$$ buzzword on the block. Just go to ChatGPT and say, "Program the next Witcher game for me" and see what happens...;) It recently plagiarized an article from Tom's Hardware, and IP owners are already using the DMCA to take down "AI art" which happens to be little more than collected bits and pieces of existing Internet artwork and cobbling it together. In the Tom's Hardware incident, ChatGPT didn't own up to the heist of the article until it was asked point blank, and then it told the truth, "Yes, I copied it." A lot of wasted time there, eh? This ChatGPT fad has the potential to make RIAA copyright crackdowns seem like a slap on the wrist. (If you can't tell, I loathe misleading marketing.)
OR... it will lead to a new position called Prompt Engineer, responsible for developing the language that provides the expected output without plagiarism. AI can do amazing things but is also capable of stupidity if left unsupervised.

Look at Chris Perna's Instagram. Being a prompt engineer will be a thing sooner rather than later. Even if that's only 5% of a job function

these ai are not intelligent, they are just good at pattern matching. That means for a given input, it looks for patterns of things that tend to follow and then constructs output based on what it finds. It does this recursively, so it can be infinitely complex, but there’s no thought process involved just a training module of things that “probably“ make sense to combine. The training modules have gotten to be very good, but there always will be a gap.

You're confused about how the technology works. You can make it say anything with enough prompt construction and goading.
It does not reply, or think, it simply predicts what completing the text should look like given the model it was trained on and any subsequent corrective training or guidance systems.
You say it replied, "Yes, I copied it," but with the right prompt it could have easily "replied" that "No, this is my original thought," or "I'm actually a monkey trapped in a cage with a typewriter."

edit: Also, upon looking up what you were talking about, that was "Google Bard" not "ChatGPT" ... and the author of that article also appears to be confused about how the technology works, or at least pretends to be for the sake of their article.

Let me correct that for you: " It brought us lots of scalper cash, but it isn't useful now that it crashed and we had to find a way to sell to the common gamer instead of the crypto miner. We liked the money flow though, so we figured out a few ways to make the prices super inflated. Hopefully we processed enough wool."

Glad to see some sanity in nVidia's statements. They could be going all in on crypto as a way to sell cards instead of admitting the truth that it's a waste of energy. I wonder if they'll walk that back.

And while AI is a double edge sword, I agree there are definitely benefits.

Crypto is working as intended.

Fallen 'Crypto King' Who Owes Millions to Investors Was Kidnapped and Tortured
Aiden Pleterski led a lavish lifestyle and owned McLaren sports cars and a Lamborghini — and rented a plush waterfront home for $45,000 a month.

While he has claimed that the money was lost in a series of bad trades and margin calls, he's been accused of blowing millions on his lavish lifestyle. It's estimated that he had only invested 1.6% of the funds he was given. The court filing says:

He allegedly attempted to defend himself by saying he was a "20-something-year-old kid."

They really need to put whoever is in charge of AriZona iced tea in control of inflation...
