Dudes...

This isnt going to end well for us.

and im not paranoid.

The people making all this dont have the wisdom to actually stop the bad that will inevitably come on us all.

Iain (M.) Banks scifi books paint a universe of basically well meaning AIs mostly subtly policing idiotic self destructing humanity.

But in reality all bets are off, interesting times indeed.

Yeah, I really like the Culture novels -- I have said before and will say again, it is the fictional universe I most wish I could live in. I did once read a review saying the only thing really wrong with the novels was that the AIs were impossibly well intentioned...

I've had a long career and one of the things I have noticed is that you have starry eyed developers and engineers who, perhaps foolishly, only look at the possible (but not always probable) beneficial uses of what they are creating. Very, very few look at their babies and think "What is the absolute worst outcome that this could be used for?" Those that do, don't take it further and ask "OK, now what could be worse than even that?"

I used to be one of those engineers and that is one of the reasons I am deeply suspicious of things like ChatGPT. It's a bitter pill to swallow seeing something you've created used in a manner that is the antithesis of why you created it. The best we can do today is insist on open methodologies to ensure that hardware and software doesn't have inherent vulnerabilities and isn't actively hostile to the public.

Im sure the MS statement is just smoke blowing… but with the second story, giving it more access to our version of reality seems like a very bad idea.

Bill Gates' investment in OpenAI got him the source code. There's enough reason to eschew "AI" forever, imo. I wonder what the next buzzword will be...

It's cute that WaltSee thinks Bill Gates is still running Microsoft. I bet he thinks Walt is still running Disney.
