Out of the Blue

Well, I finally gave up on trying to find my unicorn electric kettle. I settled for one that had the proper capacity, lack of plastic, and (somewhat of) a gooseneck. It doesn't have any temperature settings, but it does have a thermometer to try and get things right. That's more fidgety than I'd like, but certainly better than the saucepan system I was using in the interim. The good news, from an odd perspective, is it's a cheap piece of junk. So maybe there will be a better option when it inevitably bites the dust like its predecessors. The best aspect of this whole project is a side-effect. I mentioned recent unclogging a bathroom sink. This has been flowing freely ever since, but there was a bad odor coming from the drain. I'd previously tried pouring mouthwash down there, but pipes can't gargle well, and it didn't seem to help. Since I needed to boil a couple of throwaway batches of water in my new kettle to start with, I poured one of these down the bathroom sink. Bingo! This eliminated the odor right away. The drain is PVC, so I let the water come off the boil first to avoid worrying I'd melt the pipes. Well, I did check them afterwards, so clearly I was still a little worried. But it was fine. I'm sure I'm still going to collect a scolding about this from someone who knows more about plumbing than me (which is basically everyone). But at this point it's water under the bridge, or at least down the drain. In the end, I'm extremely pleased with the outcome of my little project. It's hard to feel clean when you're getting a face full of sink stink.

Unscented Round-up

how long did your last kettle last, blue?

i've been using one of these to make french press at least once a day for the last ~5 years or so. recently its "all done" beep started fading out so i moved it to my office and got a new one for the house.

curious how this track record stacks up in the grand scheme of electric kettles.
I'd say about two years. I think the wires in the base separated on this one. My experience has been these things last three years or so.

IANAP but... pipes also carry the hot water, and anything up to ~140F should be safe to pour. Maybe try one of those foaming drain cleaners if the stink returns.
I should be coding.

"It’s been reported that Russia has recruited Steven Seagal to teach martial arts to its soldiers"

I suspect that Seagal himself is the one who reported it. The crazy thing is that this claim would probably not even make it into his top 10 most ridiculous claims that he has made if it were to turn out he himself started this rumor.

He is equal parts unlikeable, self-absorbed, and delusional which makes him quite entertaining.

I've always wondered why they don't break stuff like that in at the factory.

In general, a new car has less than a hundred miles on the odometer. Some states have strict laws on the delineation between new and used and that includes mileage.

Also, you'd need infrastructure setup to test every engine and, if one does break, a process to rebuild it. Then you run into does state A still consider that a "new" engine or does state B consider that a "remanufactured" engine. Regulatory compliance would be Hell.

The C8 Corvette Z06 won't give you the full redline until the engine hits 500 miles. https://youtu.be/tZmNUwag5eo?t=220

Which makes absolutely perfect sense. That 500 miles is the break-in period for any automotive engine. My Ram 1500 wouldn't engage tow mode until after I had crossed over the 500 mile mark.

I've always wondered why they don't break stuff like that in at the factory. Surely most early mechanical failures are due to improper break ins by owners. I've seen manual transmissions and replacement clutches have a 1000 clutch depression break in period before driving it hard. Who the hell can keep track of that?

My car's break in period was 5000 miles. There weren't any enforced limits, it just told you what to do and not to do in the manual during the break in period, which I doubt most people even read. It was also required to change the oil at 5000 miles, and 10,000 miles, which they covered, and after that the OCI is 20K miles.

Poor old sheriff's deputy (somewhere in Louisiana, last I heard) Stephen "Seagull"--my nickname for the guy. Old & fat, these days, I don't think "The Russians" could learn very much from him...;) I loved most of his early movies, they were fun. But then he started getting more involved with storylines and the dialogue, and his movies tanked hard in content. From what I'm reading, I doubt they could afford him, even so.
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

Oh I totally understand why. I'd also change oil immediately after break-in.

I did not. I rolled mine out to the first 5000 miles and when I changed it, even after towing the RV across half of the continent from west to east and then back again, I was pleasantly surprised at how mostly clean it still was. That was after towing it through the Smokeys and Appalachians.

An old automotive mechanic who performed all the local police department car maintenance said the department had got a new ford in the late 70's and the first thing they did was drive it full throttle for ~10 miles (out here in West Texas we have a couple stretches of road that are flat and straight) . It was also the last thing that car did.
So I can only imagine the number of maroons who would destroy a corvette engine in the first weekend.

Oh I well know the roads out there. Those are very good for testing the top speed of, say, one's ridiculously overbuilt Mustang Cobra or a Lightning. So I heard. From a friend. Who was totally not me.

I think I have mentioned it in the past but my bro-from-another-ho works for GM and lent me a C7 from their ambassador fleet for the weekend. Asked me to take it easy until the 500 mile mark and then let her rip. Fantastic car. If I was shorter, I would have considered buying one.
