Elden Ring is a great example of how games should be. From Kings Field, Eternal Ring to Demons Soul's, Dark Souls and finally elden ring. The games build on the mechanics of the previous and keep getting better each time without losing the good bits (mostly).

This is how software should work, every iteration is an improvement. But many other studios seem to function like rock bands, always wanting to try something new( copying currently popular thing) each album losing much of the core audience. Then next time claiming to go back to the roots, and it ends up sounding like a tribute band of themselves.
