Counter-Strike 2 Announced

Valve announces Counter-Strike 2, officially taking the lid off of what has become a poorly-kept secret of late, though all the leaks may have just been viral marketing. This new era for the multiplayer first-person shooter will officially begin this summer, but limited playtesting is underway right now. Check out this FAQ for details on how to join the test. Key takeaways are that the game is being remade using the Source 2 engine, and players will retain all the items they've earned playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The new version will also include new features, which will be announced closer to the launch. But the Counter-Strike Website has first details and videos showing off some of what's new. Here's a summary:
CS2 is a free upgrade to CS:GO, marking the start a new era of Counter-Strike on Valve's Source 2 engine. The game's full range of new features will be announced at launch, but during the limited testing period we'll be evaluating a subset of those features to get it ready for the worldwide release.

Here's some of what CS2 will mean for players:

  • Upgraded and overhauled maps
  • Game-changing dynamic smoke grenades
  • Tick-rate-independent gameplay
  • Redesigned visual effects and audio
  • All of a player's CS:GO items go with them to CS2

Honestly, I am okay with the same game just evolving with the tech but basically staying the same game. Add a feature or two, sharpen up some things, but basically....the same.

Yeah, I agree, this is a great update in that respect.
This was more about the silliness in calling it CS 2
When this would actually be the 4th CS... but the one with the least amount of change from the prior iteration when compared to past new releases.

Other games can do other things. Counter-Strike can be Counter-Strike. It isn't like CS is one of the EA/2K sports franchises where they charge for a whole new game every year even though they only make incremental improvements.

It's awesome to be living through a new Counter-Strike game coming out, played a big CS:S game last night with friends just to celebrate!

Well ok maybe not entirely "new", but it's a least deserving of the title "2" more than another certain game Especially since they've already done a fair amount of changes/upgrades in this new version, with the promise of a lot more to come (they've have a limited beta test that's already leaked publicly apparently).

The voxel data-structured smoke is just the coolest thing ever, can't wait to see how that plays out.

I'd argue there were far more changes to Overwatch 2 than this CS 2 will end up being.

In fact... I feel like this is more accurate:
CS1: CS beta - 1.6
CS2: CS:S
CS3: CS:GO
CS3.5: CS 2

Like this CS will be the least changed compared to previous iterations... and yet it's the first one to get the "2" sequel identifier.

Never was necessary, still isn't.

Yeah this is just it. Well, unless you're using the SIG rifle, but the general idea with each gun is that they're super unique and almost have their own personality. They want you to master them "as is" basically since they each handle differently. Adding in aiming down the sights was never a real thing in Counter Strike at any time going back to the original beta days.

If they did, it would be more of a squad based COD and they're certainly not looking to do that with CS. It's mostly a perfected 5v5 formula at this point and they don't want to mess with it.
Exactly. The identical hipfire POV intensifies the 'gun personality' because it allows you to move/aim/shoot all the guns the same way, but your results will vary wildly. So you have to adjust with each gun.

There's an old Half-Life 1 era Counterstrike mod called Counter Warfare 2 which has ADS and bots. I tend to play that over old Cs1.5

Sad to see the end of Cpunter Strike.
We all know Valve never goes past 2, or sometimes never finishes 2.

Go live date will be the biggest clusterfuck in modern gaming history. How many people will try to launch CS2 at launch day? Peak concurrent count for CSGO is 1.4 million... so CS2 will hit 3 million in 24 hours?

Looking at the videos, I guess I expected more. Talking about a new source engine and unless I've missed other titles that came out with it, I expected more. It looks like they played it safe here. The graphics look very similar to regular CS GO, but obviously they updated the smoke grenades effects to be more tactile. Everything else doesn't look all that much upgraded other than perhaps cleaner/sharper looking? I'm not even sure. I guess they're mostly sticking with, if it ain't broke, don't fix it idea.

Source 2 was leaked in 2010 (being tested on L4D2 maps) and tools were released publicly in 2014 for Dota 2, which soon after became the first game to upgrade engines (2015). Then it powered Artifact and Alyx. So no, it's not some massive graphical leap, I don't think it was ever meant to be. In terms of CS, specifically, I very much doubt they're at all interested in drastically raising system requirements for some fluff visual improvements... People with potatoes want to be able to play with their friends, and the pros want 600fps for peak reactivity.

Tick-rate-independent gameplay
That's been tried before - resulted in things like 'le warp' in Quake 3, and being hit while in cover by lagging opponents, etc. I suspect this is going to end poorly, once players understand how to abuse it.

2023 year of the Remakes! Sad thing is they are some of the best games to come out to date lol

I like the tech they show on the Website but I hope they do something more interesting with it than boring old vanilla counter strike. Yeah OK maybe I just don't like sitting in the spectators queue 95% of the play time since I'm usually first to die lol.
