SSI Silver Box Games Return

Developer Strategic Simulations and publisher SNEG announce plans to bring back eight more classic D&D titles from the past to GOG.com and Steam. Most of these have been unavailable for upwards of 20 years. But we won't have to wait long to take this nostalgia trip, as they're all expected to launch this month. For no discernable reason, this relaunch is hard to understand, so forgive us our confusion. We asked for a clarification, but haven't received one yet, so we'll do the best with what we've got. There will be a base release called Silver Box Classics, and here are the GOG.com and Steam listings for that. This is said to include the first four Dragonlance module adaptations: "Heroes of the Lance, Dragons of Flame, War of the Lance, and Shadow Sorcerer." But those four titles also have individual listings on both Steam and GOG.com. These say the Silver Box is required, suggesting they are DLC, but if they are only to be included in the Silver Box then they shouldn't need individual listings. As we say, confusion. The other four games are: DragonStrike (GOG.com/Steam), Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace (GOG.com/Steam), Fantasy Empires (GOG.com/Steam), and DeathKeep (GOG.com/Steam). Here's word:
It’s time to unearth some gems from the past as today, SNEG — boutique publisher of long-lost titles — is pleased to announce the return of eight long dormant Dungeons & Dragons games. The list features many of the first D&D video games, including Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace, Fantasy Empires, DragonStrike, and DeathKeep. Additionally, Heroes of the Lance, Dragons of Flame, War of the Lance, and Shadow Sorcerer will be made available in the Silver Box Classic Bundle. These titles are returning to Windows PC, some for the first time in over 25 years, and will be available on GOG and Steam later this March.

Originally released in the ‘80s and ‘90s, many were able to enjoy these titles on classic gaming hardware including 3DO, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, NES, Apple II and even the SEGA Master System. Now, SNEG is excited to help players relive those memories on modern PCs.

I'm interested in War of the Lance. Of all those games, that got the most playtime from me. I had the Apple II version, and the number of disk swaps in that game were ridiculous (although understandable once I became a programmer). My memory is kind of fuzzy, but I think I bought a second disk drive because of that game! Even then, it would take 2-5 minutes for an AI turn. I assume the PC version is a lot easier to run.

Once I got a PC, Fantasy Empires got some playtime as well, but I couldn't help but exploit the AI bug that allowed a single archer to defeat ANY army on defense.

Fantasy empires was great back in the day! Although it required a joystick for parts of it, sadly, which is why I haven’t replayed it much.

It's strange that Space Rogue is available but not the others.

Nightdive Studios acquired the rights for a Space Rogue re-release. The rest are probably buried deep in EA's vaults of disbanded company IPs.

Just yesterday I was thinking of half a dozen of EA's early games Bad Blood, Cybermage, Escape from Hell, Fountain of Dreams, Keef the Thief and Sentinel Worlds.
I would love to see the rest of Origins catalogue hit GOG along with Bad Blood and Cybermage. They had some fun (if not famous) games like Moebius, Windwalker, Shadowcaster, Tangled Tales, and Times of Lore.

As for the Silver Box classics, I remember being so hyped after seeing magazine ads for Heroes of the Lance, then being bitterly disappointed when it finally came out. Navigation was a nightmare, and the combat outright sucked. I never touched the follow up, but War of the Lance got some decent playtime, along with War in Middle Earth.

I would guess gog has inquired about them but I suppose EA isn't interested. I think the only two gold box games from SSI missing now are the Buck Rogers ones. Maybe it's a rights issue.

I'm not really familiar with these at all.
But Dark Sun: Shattered Lands from SSI was one of my favorite games as a kid.
It was the fist PC game I ever played that just seemed to have infinite possibility. Probably the first open world game I ever played. There was no hand holding, full character creation, full D&D class/ability/magic system, lots of cool rare and special loot... etc. etc.

Great news! I will be spending some money at GOG sometime soon I guess. I have played most of the Gold Box games numerous times, since they were new. But never had much experience with these games.

Looking good, probably go with GOG since they go the extra mile to get compatibility issues resolved.

I had a large number of these games back on the Amiga (with Eye of the Beholder being my No. 1 favorite) but they obviously haven't held up that well over time. I re-purchased the majority of them on PC when they were released as a multi-CD retail box compilation well over a decade ago but have rarely felt inclined to revisit them. They were great fun back in the day though.

I bought Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace, DragonStrike, Heroes of the Lance, Dragons of Flame, War of the Lance, and Shadow Sorcerer when they came out. I was wondering who owned the rights to the silver box games when I read that gog had purchased the gold box games. Unless SNEG is owned by gog I wonder if gog contacted them about making these games available to purchase again. It gives me hope someday I'll see Nocturne and Bureau 13.
