Out of the Blue

Beware the Ides of March! And, of course, beware the one-hit wonder. So I completed my campaign in DOOM (2016) yesterday. It's been great getting my game on again. I'm very pleased at the recovery of my hand and elbow, as I can now withstand lengthy play sessions once again with little difficulty. I had a really great time with the game throughout. It had a lot of the original DOOM to it without that being a burden. In keeping with the original concept, if not execution, I especially appreciated the setups for combat that forced you to go Rambo instead of being able to kite monsters around to kill them individually. And the environments were incredible. The vast Martian foundry complex and the Hell levels were amazing. But I will say it is frustrating that the game doesn't always follow its own navigation rules since a key element is hunting for secrets. There are plenty of objects and barriers you should be able to access or traverse, only to encounter invisible walls. On the other hand I loved the ability to go back and scour for secrets you missed as part of your ongoing campaign. It gave a clever diversion from progressing the main campaign at times. I played the whole way on Ultra-Violence, stubbornly fighting through the fact that my reflexes are not what they once were (not that I was never a very exceptional player to begin with). I'm not a big achievement chaser, but I was disappointed there wasn't one for the difficulty level. In the end I would have gotten the same achievement for completing the campaign on the easy mode. The whole experience was great enough that I am disappointed there is no DLC, which I guess is an outgrowth of the whole SnapMap dealie. DOOM Eternal seems like an entirely different game, so I'm trying to decide if I'll play that next.

Thanks, Wanna. That trainer maybe the only way I can muddle through the game.

As for Doom Eternal. I am really torn. It looks great, at times it's fun as hell, but I have tried, and I just can't finish it, and I'm maybe 6 hours into the game. The game play is very different. The boss levels feel more like they belong in Serious Sam, with rediculous traps and gimmicks. That by itself is not bad, and can sometimes be fun, but it feels very gimmicky at times. But the damn Parkour style jumping is infuriating. It's more like an arcade platformer when you're trying to get through one of those areas: Run fast and jump straight at wall, slide left just the exact amount, jump to the next hard to discern platform, slide right just the right amount, jump to the next hard to discern platform or handhold, rinse and repeat until you fall. When you fall, you have to start the ENTIRE tedious process again.

From reading others opinions below, maybe I'm on the worst parkour section now and if I can just get past it, maybe I can enjoy it again, but even with a detailed walkthru I'm finding that section excruciatingly painful.
And I think you haven't got to the touch/grab sucessive platforms and they fall immediately, *plus* chained timed jumps, *through* rotating obstacles ... terrible Super Mario Doom.

Used Fling trainer, infinite jumps -a kind of flight- or I would have trashed the game in disgust (did, till I found the trainer).

Thanks, I may need that trainer.
I bought the game and realized it wasn't DOOM when there was a tutorial section. sigh

Ditto, Villenueve did an outstanding job.

I didn't like any of the scifi or superhero movies since Endgame, to the point of disgust.

Yeah, I'm on my third playthrough of 2016. There are a few areas that are difficult to navigate that I had forgotten about (that climb of the Ardent Tower!), but overall a great game.

I am in the middle of playing through that new Doom 3 source engine, with the original flash light gameplay, and the funny thing is you can tell that a lot of the basic framework of Doom 2016 was take from Doom 3: The airlock transitions to new areas, the general layout of the maps. True, Doom 3 has smaller areas that are dark and cramp, but I am constantly being surprised by elements that were similar to the newer game,

I think it's filmable as written. Extremely difficult, but doable, especially if broken into two parts. The problem with Villeneuve is that he claimed to want to follow the book closely but then screwed with the dialogue bigtime and made an awful mess of the characters. And the casting had some huge misses. Josh Brolin absolutely SUCKED as Gurney. Lady Jessica and Piter were also terrible. Really, the only characters that turned out decent at all were Duncan, Kynes, and Thufir. That is not forgivable in my opinion.

I'll take the Lynch version any day, even with its extreme deviations. At least it had some excellent dialogue, casting, acting. All Villeneuve's version really brought to the table was pretty lighting and modern effects. I expected a lot more after what he did with Blade Runner. But I guess I shouldn't have.

As compared to, what, the Sci-Fi SyFy version? Even though I genuinely like Lynch's version, it also has a ton of problems. While I still agree that Dune is unfilmable as written, Villeneuve's version is the closest we've gotten so far.

FYI
Moddb.com knows they’re down. https://twitter.com/ModDB
On the upside they mention “a nice boost in bandwidth.” Not sure if that affects a freeloader like me.

2 hours ago (argh)
“Hey folks, apologies again - we’re working to get the site back up and running (headlines were part of our scheduled tweets). Cloud flare also appears to be conducting some maintenance. Fingers crossed it’s back to modding and indie gaming soon! 🤞”

Later yesterday (shit happens)
“Hey all - due to some unforeseen consequences, site maintenance is taking longer than expected. We're not expecting uptime any earlier than the next five hours. Apologies all but be ready to try out some new bandwidth and awesome UGC when we're back online!”

Yesterday (the heads-up)
“We will be experiencing a temporary outage due to planned service migration at 3PM UTC today until 7PM UTC. During this time, logins will be affected, downloads will be limited, and media may not load. The result will be a nice boost in bandwidth. Thanks for the patience folks!”

I can't wait to see Christopher Walken as the Emperor in Dune II. I mean it's either going to be ham-fisted cringe, or awesome beyond belief. Either way it's going to be entertaining You gotta love Christopher Walken. You gotta.....love him.

I really enjoyed Doom Eternal as well. I stupidly played it on something crazy like Nightmare or Ultra Nightmare I can't remember, and holy shit was that hard. Fighting multiple Marauders and Doom Hunters at the same time was so frustrating. Then I remember being annoyed it wasn't even a special achievement saying I did it. All I have are the memories or whatever.

Edit: It was just Nightmare, Ultra Nightmare is one life apparently.
