Sons Of The Forest Hits Early Access in a Big Way

Early Access to Sons Of The Forest is now underway, and you can pick up the beta of Endnight's survival/horror game on Steam to support its ongoing development. This arrived yesterday, and has blown up in a big way, achieving a peak user count of over 350,000, and showing a "Very Positive" rating based on over 16,000 reviews. Here's the recent Multiplayer Trailer with a look, and here's word on the game:
Sent to find a missing billionaire on a remote island, you find yourself in a cannibal-infested hellscape. Craft, build, and struggle to survive, alone or with friends, in this terrifying new open-world survival horror simulator.

Experience complete freedom to tackle the world how you want. You decide what you do, where to go and how best to survive. There are no NPC's barking orders at you or giving you missions you don't want to do. You give the orders, you choose what happens next.

Enter a world where nowhere is safe and fight against a range of mutated creatures, some who are almost human like, and others who are like nothing you have ever seen before. Armed with pistols, axes, stun batons and more, protect yourself and those you care for.

I really like the deaf/dumb companion they give you for single-player. He makes building a lot easier (gathers whatever materials you tell him to) and is apparently an expert hand-fisherman!

The great thing about the previous game was that you could tweak a lot of the server settings and kind of create your own game type. I always played co-op and made it scary and tense. Gliding along with ease in the game wasn't very fun.

Well, he's not a replacement for an actual co-op partner, mainly eases some of the tedium involved with solo-building something out of literally hundreds of logs. He can't use weapons or participate in combat in any way AFAICT, and he won't follow you into caves so you're still gonna be exploring the dark on your own... I did find out that he's present in multiplayer games, as well, but he's a lot less useful there just because players do everything he does more efficiently. But 'scary and tense' goes completely out the window if you're playing co-op anyway, in my experience.
It's Early Access. Is the sales because some high profile Twitch streamers played it or is it actually good and different from the other multiplayer survival horror games?

The Forest is great, highly recommended! Obviously it's a horror survival game, so if you don't like harvesting and building stuff mostly alone (or almost alone, with a friend in coop), then it's just not the genre for you, and that's okay. But it's well-made!

Yeah, I waited until it was fully released before I played it and it was definitely worth the wait. And I agree about steam reviews. It has become yet another platform for amateur comedians to try and get as many points (upvotes) as they can. Valve should really start managing that crap. I mean, I don't mind a good laugh every now and then, but it has become the new culture. It's too bad, because if any review is worth reading, it's about an early access game. Otherwise, I don't really take Steam reviews too seriously

Very true. I just wanted to say, Green Inferno

The Forest was one of the best games I've played in years. And fyi, the devs did not abandon it. It was one of the most successful early access games I've seen. They did all the right things; listened to the people playing the game and prioritized the changes accordingly up until its full release. Other devs should take heed

Was "The Forest" that big of a deal? I mean I started playing it, but survival games don't seem to be my thing.

Now we just need a criminal charge of murder and disappeared devs and the resemblance will be complete!
