Ukraine's Atomic Heart Attack

The Government of Ukraine plans to petition Valve, Microsoft, and Sony to remove Atomic Heart from digital stores in Ukraine, and will ask platform holders to consider “limiting distribution” of the game in other countries. At heart of the matter are the new first-person shooter's Russian roots. There are allegations that sales of the game directly benefit the Russian government and that the game is possibly being used to harvest user data. Ukrainian tech website Dev.au first reported on this, and PCGamesN has a statement in English directly from the Ukraine government:
“Regarding the situation with the release of the game Atomic Heart, which has Russian roots and romanticises communist ideology and the Soviet Union, The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine will send an official letter to Sony, Microsoft, and Valve requesting a ban on selling digital versions of this game in Ukraine,” says Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, Alex Bornyakov.

“We also urge limiting the distribution of this game in other countries due to its toxicity, potential data collection of users, and the potential use of money raised from game purchases to conduct a war against Ukraine.”

“According to media reports, the game’s development was funded by Russian enterprises,” the statement continues. “Therefore, we call for all users worldwide to avoid this game. We also want to emphasise that the game developers have not publicly condemned the Putin regime and the bloody war that Russia has unleashed against Ukraine.”

No offence to Ukraine, but they don't get to pick what game I want to spend my money on. They can politely go fudge themselves. I'm glad Steam doesn't remove games because some special interest groups starts whining.

Interestingly they may have 1 huge point there, GEM Capital (investment firm) is run by a poodle who is on the international sanctions list, you are not legally allowed to do business with him at all as Western company. But they target the wrong entities. Focus Entertainment (Yes, the scumbags who scammed the sherlock developers) is the one they should target, because all money goes to publisher first. And does France not have laws against violating sanctions?

I don't think Steam pays out a single cent to "developers" directly unless you know, they self-publish. So yah, gonna be wild. Hopefully the one who should be gotten gets got here, Focus Entertainment

But you know what the kicker is? Owlcat - is also financed by GEM

Wait wait wait... the game has socialism undertones but thats part of the story, The whole thing is a big WHAT IF. You simply cannot deny entertainment the idea of envisioning something even it is something you don't like.

Likewise.. Where is proof that this is money going to the Russian gov? I see more text on dismissing the content and less text on backing up the mouth.

If they make at best 5 million dollars, that pays for an hour or so for their entire operation. While Russia has illegally invaded Ukraine, let’s keep in mind the high level of corruption in the Ukrainian government for many years: this has been highly documented on national news many times. The Ukraine needs to win this war, but one eye should be kept on them at all times.

One of the reasons this old man games is to forget about all the BS in the world, if only for a few hours. No one in this thread has any way of really knowing what is happening on the other side of the globe, much less in the US (if you are in the US) with any certainty. There is no way to get news that is trustworthy, none at all, even our understanding of history is being changed to suit today's political agendas. When faced with the realities of war we all agree war is terrible, yet somehow 66% of the American public cheered on Shock and Awe in Iraq. Not me, however, when Iraq was unfolding I was certain that my fellow citizens were too smart to fall for the BS (the UN presentation evidence of Iraqi chemical warfare mobile labs was rendered models rather than actual photographs of said units) after having gone through Vietnam. Remember that at the beginning of the war, most game publishers stopped selling products in Russia and Belarus. Isn't this just the flip side of that? Typically Ukraine has been pretty good about not just calling shit out for shits and giggles. I'm inclined to believe they have valid concerns.
If Russia stops fighting, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends. Slava Ukraini!

Supporting developers is great. Let's pretend that these are 100% zero-bad-intent developers. If they're still a Russian company (and they are, with offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg), then they are taxed, heavily, by the Russian government. That isn't a maybe. That is simple truth. A meaningful portion of any money spent on this game will, absolutely, no question, end up in the coffers of the Russian government.

Buying the game would mean that my money may well go to buying a bullet fired at Ukrainian soldiers, or to execute a Ukrainian civilian.

And even one such bullet resulting from my decision is too many. Even the possibility isn't OK with me. It isn't like there's nothing else I can be playing, not given the cost of playing this one.

And that's all assuming that they are, as I said, zero-bad-intent. The evidence suggests that they aren't. And yeah, they're headquartered in Cyprus, not Russia. The tiny island of Cyprus isn't where people go to escape Russia. It is the place Russian companies legally move their headquarters to bypass anti-Russian sanctions.
