Diablo IV Open Beta Next Month

PureDiablo has a video from the IGN Fan Fest where Blizzard's Joe Shely announces dates for two beta testing weekends for Diablo IV. Those who pre-purchase the action/RPG sequel on any platform will get an Early Access weekend with the beta beginning on March 17th. Everyone else can get in on an Open Beta the next weekend, beginning on March 24th. There are no plans for a wipe between the two weekends, but all progression will be lost upon the launch of the full game. It is noted that unlike some betas that come a week before a game's launch, the schedule here will allow the developers to incorporate feedback into the final game before its arrival on June 6th. Here are excerpts where the Diablo IV Game Director outlines the schedule, and a bit on what the beta will show us:
Remember, of course, that the game itself is coming out on June 6th. And you're going to be able to play the beta on March 17th through March 19th, so that weekend, if you've preordered… Now everyone, everyone in the world will be able to play it on March 24th through March 26th, the following weekend.

And the beta itself, it's quite extensive, it's quite a significant look at the game. It is limited by that period of time, the servers will shut down at the end of that time. But there's no time-limit within the game. You can level all the way up to 25, which is quarter of the way to the level cap of 100 in the full game. You'll be able to play all the way through the Prologue. You'll be able to play through Act I, which takes place in Fractured Peaks, one of our five areas in the game. And you'll be able to play through all the campaign and side-quests that exist in that area. So there's quite a lot to check out.

I might get this just to experience the story, since the visuals and atmosphere seem to be on point, unlike those of D3. I doubt I will be playing it much though since from all I've been able to glean, the developers have hobbled the multiplayer aspects of the game and the gameplay seems to be basically D3 on steroids.

POE2 will probably be my ARPG of choice when and if it ever gets released.

One of the things that bugged me about d3 for the longest time was that it was much more enjoyable to play on console. The UI and gamepad play were so much easier to handle. I've been playing computer games since 91 and my wrists cannot support keyboard play with constant clicking. That's one of the reasons I don't play PoE.

The quality of games would be far superior if everyone did this! Preorders effectively allow publishers to get away with releasing unfinished products.

Granted smaller independent devs need early cash flow, but companies like blizzard certainly can weather the storm.

Additionally, on this one I might wait a bit longer with the concern for pay-to-win microtransactions. I don't know there will be any, but there is apparently concern some will appear after the initial release sales bubble has burst. Only time will tell...

Hard pass until it's on sale for $20 or so. I'm only interested in finishing the campaign once. I'm not Blizzard's exploitable clickfest bitch.

Same here. In fact, it kind of ruins the actual launch for me. Rather than the hype of the unknown on a new game that I don't have to worry about them wiping the data of, now I know what to expect and am basically racing to new content I didn't catch in the beta.

I recall similar with Diablo 3 which gave you the first area in the beta and perhaps the first big quest. Can't quite recall exactly but I do remember that after playing the beta that I also got into from the pre-order, the actual launch wasn't as epic as it could of been, lol.

Of course, this is mostly a me problem so to each their own.

I was in the closed beta on PC Diablo 4 has controller support built in and it's extremally well done. It was a very enjoyable experience and the way i plan to play on release. This is coming from someone that has played all the diablo games on PC with thousands of hours in D3 across all it's seasons.

Diablo 4 is going to be a good game and satisfy a lot of ARPG fans. Not all of them of course, but most I suspect.

Meh. We've had lots of very good Diablo clones over the years. Not looking forward to a microtransaction-infested Diablo.

It won't be "microtransaction-infested". Get over Diablo Immortal already, I believe most of us have. That was a mobile game actually called Diablo 3 LITE, providing you with exactly what you can expect from a mobile game but better. To those of us who expected a Diablo 4 even after it was announced as a mobile game, and then couldn't get over the fact that it wasn't... welp, I've run out of what to say to you. Anyway, you'll probably hear from others how great D4 is -- as I also expect it will be -- and play it anyway

I, for one, am actually excited about this news. D4 was one of those games I just never expected to release without 600 delays. Seems they're on schedule and we can all enjoy an AAARPG soon.

D3 with a gamepad is great. I still prefer to use my m/kb on PC....but I think they did a good job of making it work on consoles.

Diablo immortal sucked. So boring. Have high hopes for this. Mind you diablo 3 was mediocre on launch, but it turned out to be quite fun 5 years later lol

Pretty sure they said the pc version will have controller support. I played D3 on both pc and console, combat was more fun with the controller, inventory management was way better with a mouse.

Seriously can't even imagine buying a Diablo game on console. Not going to beta test this but of course getting it on PC. It's a mouse+kb game and always will be.

I thought they already had a few of those? Or is it going to be after this short (?) open beta? With more content, etc.

Oh duh, it says it right in there. Early week of beta access for Pre-order people. Not worth it just yet to pre-order, I'd say.
