New System Shock Demo

As part of the Steam Next Fest mentioned below, Nightdive Studios is offering a new playable demo on Steam for System Shock, the upcoming remake of the classic action/RPG. Word is: "Join us during the Steam Next Fest, where you will experience the power of true artificial intelligence as you play the latest version of System Shock. But be warned, players: the game you are about to play at Steam Next Fest is just a glimpse into the world we’ve created for you." It's been a few decades, so here's a refresher so no one finds this a shock to their system:
System Shock is the fully fledged remake of the ground breaking original from 1994, combining cult gameplay with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface and all-new sounds & music; it even has the original voice actor of SHODAN, one of gaming’s most iconic villains. Witness the rebirth of one of the greatest and most influential games ever created.

It's really good and seriously HUGE. I'm actually shocked at how much gameplay they give you. It reminds me of the Thief 2 demo which gave an insane amount of gameplay for a demo.

Demo has a couple of minor bugs--binding custom keys apparently has to be redone at each play, but other options, like 3840x2160P, stick between plays. Sound is really good. And--the save game (save on demand) feature works very well, too! Nice for a playable demo.
Yup, had this too and also had the weird 'Music turned to 10' when I reloaded a level. I HATE in game music and this pushed my buttons.

I never played the first 2, but this one the demo map is supposed to be larger.

Visuals were OK in my opinion. What was not OK:

- No five button mouse support in a 2023 remake? LOL
- No item description when you hover the mouse over it? It seems you have to pick up every piece of garbage to find out what it is unless I missed something, but if I did, it should be more obvious.
- No auto-sorting of the messy inventory in 2023? LOL
- Cyberspace was boring as fuck. Playing through this single sequence in the demo was unfun enough to turn me off the game.

It's definitely a hard pass for me. I have no System Shock nostalgia because I never got into the original and I have a backlog from here to Mars so I'd rather play games that appeal to me more. The System Shock 2 remake might be a different story because that one actually has a certain nostalgia factor for me but this one here? Nope.

There's a remake coming for shock 2?
Also for the inventory comment... some may argue that that is part of the meta. Inventory management. If I recall I had to manage inventory in Deus Ex (all of them), Prey 2017, Dishonored, etc. I think it's just part of the immersive sim experience when dealing with inventory. Not arguing for or against it. Just saying that some will probably say it's completely intentional.

Inventory management is the exact reason I can't stand the Resident Evil games. Primarily the older ones. You would literally have to walk by whether ammo or health and not take it with you since you had to hold onto a crank or key that takes up multiple slots of inventory. It was so damn annoying and frustrating. I'm still not sure how I beat Resident Evil 3 remake. I gave up on 2 out of frustration and have a long standing love/hate relationship with the other Resident Evil titles. It's like, I'll enjoy them for a bit and then grow increasingly frustrated when I'm battling my inventory more than the mutants. Takes the air out of the balloon.

Totally fine if it's not your cup of tea.

Uh wow, it's actually quite good. They basically updated everything and went retro with some of the textures, the visual blend works really well. Loving this so far and it wasn't even on my radar before. Highly recommend people download the demo and check it out.

Yep! I will definitely buy this game when it ships. I didn't know what to expect, but I found the graphics very good and pretty much up-to-date. The very short intro was pretty bland, but once onboard the Shodan station I had a difficult time putting it down last night! Light years better than the original, imo, which I owned. Play is very nice. Recommended. Very little "retro" here that I've seen so far. Interface is cool, fun, and easy. Mapping is good, etc.

Demo has a couple of minor bugs--binding custom keys apparently has to be redone at each play, but other options, like 3840x2160P, stick between plays. Sound is really good. And--the save game (save on demand) feature works very well, too! Nice for a playable demo.
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

Ground breaking game comes back with apparently nothing really new based on game advances in decades.

The original dragged to a tedious crawl about 2/3 of the way in and the cyberspace part sucked donkey balls.

At best a curiosity to be sampled once it hits the bargain bin.

Didn't they release a demo for this like two years ago? Feel like I played this thing and it was kind of.....I don't know, let down I guess. It was retro but not in a great way. I have no idea how this new demo plays, but the old game however great it was, was a product of it's time. Once you remove the rose tinted glasses, it's not the game the developers would have made had they set out to do so today. I feel like this might be great with people with a lot of nostalgia for the original game.

SS2 was a much better in every possible way. (Still one of my favorite rpg shooters and holds up well, even today)

I'm actually, still playing this demo as a matter of fact. I'm shocked at how much bigger the entire map is compared to the first demo we got a while ago. I am also not a huge fan of the retrographics look and I think I even stated that when the first demo came out. It won't keep me from playing the game, though, because I do believe that it is fun. I'm having fun with it.

I'm not sure you guys know what PS1/2 graphics look like.

For my part I was referring to the deliberately low res appearance more than any other settings and I stand by that.

Why does it look like this? I don't remember the first demo looking this low res.

The first sneak peek actually looked worse. Much worse. The art style is a conscious decision to harken back to the original.

Oh well. If that's what they're going for, then that's what they're going for. I've kind of burned out on the faux "retro" trend in games lately but as Reactor said above, to each his own. Thanks for the explanation.
