Steam Next Fest February 2023; Part One

The Steam Next Fest February 2023 is now live, offering seven days of demos, livestreams, demos, sales, demos, and demos. As mentioned, many of these demos will only be available for the duration of the fest, so you'll have to budget your time accordingly. Feel free to mail us about any demos you think are worth sharing with everyone else. To start, here's a first roundup of some we heard about through the developers or publishers:

  • Afterimage (Windows). "Reveal the hidden secrets of a fantasy land in Afterimage! Explore the magnificent landscapes and ruins of an ancient metropolis, meeting mysterious colossal beings and adorable roaming spirits along the way. The thrilling adventure of this marvelous 2D hand-drawn world awaits you!" Here's a trailer.
  • The End of the Sun (Windows, macOS, Linux). "The End of the Sun is a first-person exploration and adventure story-driven game, set in the Slavic fantasy world. As the ashter (Slavic sorcerer) who is gifted with the ability to travel in time, you come to a mysterious village, but you cannot find anyone there, at least not as you expected." Here's a trailer.
  • Fabledom (Windows). "Once upon a Village.. Set in a wholesome fairytale world, Fabledom is the ideal laid back City builder. Enjoy the growth of your settlement, trade and use diplomacy to ally or challenge your neighbors, and most importantly, find yourself a prince or princess and live happily ever after!"
  • Farworld Pioneers (Windows). "Farworld Pioneers is an open-world, sci-fi sandbox. Build and manage thriving colonies on hostile alien planets. Recruit survivors with unique personalities and skills. Craft, build, mine and farm peacefully, or strap an electric death rifle to your back and take on the galaxy!"
  • God of Rock (Windows). "The God of Rock has gathered the universe’s greatest musicians to clash for musical supremacy. Battle to the beat by hitting notes in rhythm and unleash harmonic attacks against opponents in this competitive rhythm-fighting game hybrid."
  • Gripper (Windows). "Gripper is a story-driven action game with boss fights on wheels. Tear your enemies apart with a grappling hook. Rip out their metal hearts to gain abilities. Rescue your family and uncover the secrets of the collapsing world."
  • I Am Future: Cozy Apocalypse Survival (Windows). "You're alone on a skyscraper roof in a flooded city. Welcome to the coziest post-apocalypse ever. Build, craft, farm, fish, cook -- with a view."
  • Ravenbound (Windows). "Fear everything and nothing for death brings you closer to victory in this challenging open world action-roguelite. As the Vessel of an ancient power you must use steel and skill to complete your mission in a dangerous fantasy world inspired by Scandinavian folklore." Here's a trailer.
  • Ship Graveyard Simulator 2 (Windows). "Dust off your torch and hammer - it's time to get back to work, you have a new job to do. Visit the new beach coast with the largest, biggest ship graveyard in the world, dismantle huge ship parts and collect tons of precious steel. Roll up your sleeves, it's time to get back to the business."
  • Teslagrad 2 (Windows). "Lumina, a young Teslamancer, finds herself stranded after her airship crash lands in Wyrmheim, a remote and treacherous land to the North. Embark on a dangerous adventure, exploring a gigantic, abandoned tower looming over a fjordside valley, on a quest to get Lumina home and back to her family." Here's a trailer.

King of the Castle seems like a pretty fascinating game, but it doesn't seem to have any matchmaking and requires that you have a fairly sizable group of friends to really play which seems like they're shooting themselves in the foot.

Desynced has a great demo. Building with a somewhat optional unit programming capability.

I tried I am Future and, meh, it didn't really grab me. Too much "go build all this stuff" right out of the gate and then "LOL, nope. You need better tools." The hunger mechanic was a bit punishing, too, for just starting out.

On to Fabledom now.
