Right now, I imagine the numerous people getting dragged into lawsuits by Mitchell probably care. Back then, I'd say if one claimed to had done something to the point where it ended up in the Guinness Book of Records, it would cause certain people to care about whether it was actually legitimate or not regardless of any monetary gain received by Mitchell stemming from that event.

Technically, yes, Mitchell did earn money off this. While not directly from the scores, he did get recognition and accolades that did help him secure things that resulted in him getting payments because of it.
