If you're running any kind of modern system you really should update that Windows 10 build. If you got an old PC though, then you should be fine I guess. *shrug*
Well, my primary processor is AMD, if that's what you are referring to -- although I assume there are Intel chips somewhere in the PC. It is a fairly modern system, built by Puget Systems in May 2020. I did Win10 upgrades for a short time, but eventually just put a hold on them. For the record:

Case: Fractal Design Define R6 USB-C
Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Ultra
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8GHz Twelve Core 105W
Ram: Crucial 32GB DDR4-2666 (2x16GB)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB Open Air
Hard Drive: Samsung 983 DCT 2TB M.2 SSD
Optical: Asus 16x Blu-ray Burner
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 850W P2

I'm with you Tact. I'm still running Win10 20H2 (which just went out of support) on both my workstation and gaming PCs ( 2 year old AMD Ryzen 7 systems). While I will upgrade the workstation to 22H2 soon (mainly for security reasons), I see no need to upgrade the gaming PC. When it comes to gaming, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Gaming is all I use that PC for. I suspect the gaming PC will likely be the first one I upgrade to Win11 though, as, sooner or later, we'll see Win11 specific features like DirectStorage become enough of a performance issue to warrant it.

While I agree there is better support for some CPU features in the newer Win10 builds and Win11 (especially for the latest Intel CPUs), there's been lot's of benchmarks posted that really don't show it makes much of a difference in real world performance.

If you REALLY care about getting every bit of performance out of an Intel CPU (prior to 12th gen), you'll see a much bigger impact by disabling Meltdown & Spectre mitigations which are only of concern in virtualized server environments. I use GRC's InSpectre tool to disable them.

AMD 'undershipping' CPUs, GPUs:

I know everyone wants to make out AMD and Intel as the boogeymen, but I'm not sure I buy that story. I'm not saying fishy shit doesn't happen. NVidia played a lot of games during the crypto mining boom. But generally these companies want to do things to increase sales.

First off, admitting that are doing that to purposely increase prices would likely bring them afoul of the SEC (and it does look like the spokesperson misspoke and AMD released a clarification).

Secondly, AMD sets their own prices on chips, as does Intel. They don't need to create scarcity to raise THEIR prices. They can raise them any time they want. Scarcity would just raise prices at the retailer or OEM, which doesn't put money in AMD's pocket.

The clarification makes more sense. They're undershipping because there's a back log of inventory right now, and in their update PCWorld pretty much admits their original headline was click bait:

Update: Drew Prairie, AMD’s VP of communications, reached out with the following clarification: “We are shipping below consumption because there is too much inventory in the channel and that partners want to carry lower levels of inventory based on the demand they are seeing and their expectations for their business…the idea we are doing this to keep prices “elevated” isn’t accurate. Our client ASP was flat year over year, and that is due to mix of CPUs shipped.”

This article originally published with the headline “AMD is ‘undershipping’ chips to keep CPU, GPU prices elevated” but it has been updated to reflect AMD’s clarification.

You notice that nowhere in that paragraph is there a mention of 'security'?

In fact, I did a text search, and the word 'security' does not appear anywhere in that article.

Honestly, I can see how a digital circuit breaker that can be remotely managed would be really useful in commercial buildings, but for the love of God let's think about security first and not last when designing these things.
Burrito continually tells us the the IoT of things is extremely secure because most of that stuff runs Linux, and Linux is security on the intarweb. Do they make snap mouse traps that connect to wifi and can be viewed on a smartphone.

Only 18% have upgraded to Win11?! Wow. If that stat is accurate it is truly amazing. I'm coming up on passing two years without a single Win10 update. Haven't noticed any problems yet. However, as I have mentioned in this forum before, my risk profile is awfully damn low. I mean posting on this forum is probably one of the riskiest things I do...

Despite the usual uninformed scuttlebutt, Win11 is more than ready for prime time...;) My wife is still on Win10 because of the age of her hardware, and I updated hers with an update just a few days ago. Win10 was nice, just like Win7, during their respective lifespans, but Win11 really does include a fair amount of decent change. I've been running beta builds of 11 for the past 18 months or so and the amount of problems I've had with it I can count on one hand. I'm on 11 now, build 22623.1245 and haven't hit a snag yet! I gamed yesterday for 6-hours straight--not a crash anywhere. I'm up 12-16 hours a day, and no problems is the normal thing.

Most of the problems with windows these days are confined to some laptops that don't offer decent Win11 drivers from the manufacturers. Other problems are reported by people who have other configuration problems but blame Windows because nothing else occurs to them...;)

In the Insider's group, for instance, open to anyone, the OS is free. I haven't paid for any version of Windows since I paid Microsoft $30 for Win8 back in 2013, if memory serves. Win10 and now 11, have always been free, all upgrades included.

It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

When there's a duopoly in your industry, a player can do that with little downside.

Duopoly, though, is so much better than a monopoly, imo...;) AMD is slowing shipments because demand has dropped, at least in the consumer segments, but Su says she expects a fairly robust second half for consumers, as they have new GPUs and x3d CPUs in the pipe. I only wish that the 7800X3d would ship at the same time as 7900X3d and the 7950x3D! Only reason I can think for the delay is that they anticipate huge demand for the 7800X3d and want to make sure they have stockpiled enough to meet the demand, based on the huge success of the 5800X3d.

Also, paying attention and reading what your computer tries to say, regardless of how vague the descriptions are, dramatically reduces the chances of getting unplanned upgrades.
