Diablo III Season 28 Adds Altar of Rites

Blizzard announces the PTR for Diablo III will open Tuesday for a week of playtesting for Season 28 in the action/RPG sequel. As the release of Diablo IV draws nearer, Diablo III players are getting a new progression system called the Altar of Rites. Here are some details:
For Season 28, Rites of Sanctuary, we’re travelling deep into the mysterious ruins of the Festering Woods. Amid a hunting expedition, citizens hailing from New Tristram stumbled across an ominous Altar carved from an archaic material bearing cryptic markings. Shaken to their core by the eldritch aroma of the monolith, they’ve enlisted the assistance of brave Nephalem willing to investigate this sinister discovery that was once left to time—the Altar of Rites.

Home to power thought to be extinct from Sanctuary, the Altar of Rites will bestow these mystic forces upon worthy Nephalem. . .after a sacrifice is offered. You can begin interacting with the Altar of Rites at Level one.

Upon arrival at the Altar of Rites, players will see 26 icons called Seals and three Legendary Potion Powers.

Inherent RoRG was a classic, but that's baby stuff compared to what they've been doing lately. The last season I played, they had the teal-rarity mega ancient unique legendary whatever weapons, which were so powerful that they single-handedly defined your build and never needed replacing... Even if you found one around level 15 and its listed damage rating was garbage. They all had 8+ attributes including a huge skill damage bonus, a legendary affix AND a class passive, and multiple other crazy bonuses that would each individually define normal legendary weapons (like massive resource cost reduction, resource gain on crit, chance to CC, etc.). Some scaled even further in power based on Paragon levels, too.

But beyond the limited-time seasonal shenanigans, they've changed so much with the base game to drastically elevate all builds, such as more recently with the Follower system. They can now wear an entire set of items, same as you, and their abilities were reworked and scale in effect from their main stat. Several legendary items have had their powers marked with '(Emanates),' meaning that you gain the effect from your follower wearing them. So now it's a standard thing to have all the pylon/shrine bonuses, XP/gold/drop buffs, and additional CC or survivability without needing to sacrifice anything by integrating that stuff into your own build.

I also just found out last night about this new portal event (consuming a rare item drop in the Cube), like a wave-based horde mode where you try to survive for as long as possible and receive a Greater Rift-like chest at the end. The best thing from it though is the legendary gem that is used solely for enhancing ancient legendary items -- its level scales to how long you survived, up to 150, which saves you a ton of time and effort leveling up other gems the normal way to sacrifice for imbuing stat bonuses.

Just full blown power creep bomb, and I'm all for it. It looks hilarious.
One final hurrah before DIV.

There was a season where the Ring of Royal Grandeur, the one that makes sets have one less item required then normal for bonuses, was just permanently on you. Dude, the builds were insane that season because there were so many multi-set combos people could make.

Semi-randomly caught a stream of someone playing D3. It has changed so much since I last played it I almost didn't recognize it. Initially thought it might be the D4 closed beta or something. Although, part of the problem was they were playing a Monk, which I never had played so the skills were completely unknown to me. I might fire it up again, just to check it out.

It's still fun to pop in every few seasons to grind the rewards. The addition of Seals and Legendary Potion Powers looks kind of neat. This might be enough to satisfy my ARPG kick until Diablo 4 comes out.
