John Carmack Leaves Meta

John Carmack is departing Meta, where he was working on making the promise of virtual reality come true. Carmack joined Meta forebear Oculus VR in 2013 as CTO. Later that year he departed id Software, where he had been instrumental in the creation of DOOM and Quake over the years. In a post on Facebook (thanks Robert), the famed programmer expresses frustration with the bureaucratic nature of Meta, saying the experience working there leaves him "wearied of the fight" to bring value to virtual reality. He adds that this fight is "still winnable," but he is turning his full attention to the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence at his startup Keen Technologies. That said, he does call the Quest 2 "something pretty close to The Right Thing." Here's a bit on his frustration with the lack of efficiency he's had to deal with:
We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort. There is no way to sugar coat this; I think our organization is operating at half the effectiveness that would make me happy. Some may scoff and contend we are doing just fine, but others will laugh and say “Half? Ha! I’m at quarter efficiency!”

It has been a struggle for me. I have a voice at the highest levels here, so it feels like I should be able to move things, but I’m evidently not persuasive enough. A good fraction of the things I complain about eventually turn my way after a year or two passes and evidence piles up, but I have never been able to kill stupid things before they cause damage, or set a direction and have a team actually stick to it. I think my influence at the margins has been positive, but it has never been a prime mover.

This was admittedly self-inflicted – I could have moved to Menlo Park after the Oculus acquisition and tried to wage battles with generations of leadership, but I was busy programming, and I assumed I would hate it, be bad at it, and probably lose anyway.

Enough complaining. I wearied of the fight and have my own startup to run, but the fight is still winnable! VR can bring value to most of the people in the world, and no company is better positioned to do it than Meta. Maybe it actually is possible to get there by just plowing ahead with current practices, but there is plenty of room for improvement.

Make better decisions and fill your products with “Give a Damn”!

I mean, idtech is still pretty awesome, the only thing is they still haven't made good on their word to make it more moddable.

I'm actually not sure how I feel about his exit message. I left Samsung feeling and basically saying the exact same thing, but in retrospect I felt like a fucklot was on me as much as the rest of the team. He should've left sooner or change his game. Or he's just entirely right in all he said there.

WannaLogAlready: Thanks! Alkaline looks awesome.

Yeah, I'm surprised it took Carmack this long. I get that he at least wanted to see a piece of hardware released that he felt was close to his vision, but Meta was never the right fit for him.

It’s about time he left Meta. Good luck to Carmack with Keen Industries though. Cool name for a company (from Commander Keen). After seeing his whole 5 hour interview with Fridman he clearly has a big interest in AGI I’m sure he’ll make an impact.

agreed. Get Musk on it.

I sympathize with Carmack. As a 49 year old in a technical role at a large company, it is very tough to get people to listen. I’m the oldest on my team by roughly 15 years and I’ve learned the hard way that my younger co-workers have little to no interest in my advice or ideas.

Haha, Musk that crackhead. Sure, if you want someone to fuck up Meta real good I would say that Musk is the prime choice for the time being.

Honestly, the guy must be on meds, drugs, booze or all three. His initial success and rise to fame hasn't done his mental stability any favors. Musk is completely off the rails. A loose cannon. A fucking wrecking ball on steroids. If you want Meta to go away and Zucky to break down in tears, yep, let's hire Musk to clean house...

By golly, I think I'll take a gander at Alkaline v1.1 https://www.quaddicted.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=989
Thanks!
For anyone interested:

With Ironwail engine (github), no problem, a very fast one.
Couldn't make it work with Quake Remastered (inside rerelease folder), nor with the last Quakespam version (December 5, 2022).

1 Drop the Ironwail folder anywhere.
Copy inside the /id1 folder, and the autoexec.cfg and config.cfg of your usual Quake installation.
Copy the "alk1.1" folder alongside (not inside) the /id1 folder.
Ready to go !

2 Launch a normal Quake sp game, in the usual hall: console, game alk1.1.
(for complex multimap games, put them alongside /id1, console: game gamename)
3 Suggestions to add to the autoexec.cfg (or ironwail.cfg)
r_wateralpha 0.2, clean water
cl_rollangle 0, no swaying
cl_bob 0, no bobbing
fov 95, etc.
Change quicksave from F6 to F5 in config.cfg (F2,F3 for manual load and save)

Your preference:
Only in console, in each level: fog = 0, for a pristine image

No patience for ammo farming: I freeze ammo (float, rounded to zero).
For hundreds of single maps in quaddicted.com, put a .bsp inside a maps folder, *inside* id1 folder. Console, map mapname.

Have a good time !

Always suspected him of being homo+, like in the Pohl novel: human plus something more.

Now, if he can port his genius to a bioelectronic construct ...
