Was unsure at first, but after looking at some videos couldn't help myself, the game does have a lot of depth and charm. I went ahead and bought it, happy to support the awesome devs too. Hope they add some more polish and steam achievements in the near future.
I bought this. I have played Dwarf Fortress a couple times, or at least tried to, with the straight ASCII version and some of the graphic mods, albeit years ago.
This version seems friendlier already, although it has been like 10 years since I last played.

It's not quite the same, but you can always get the ASCII version for free (there are also tilesets to spruce it up). It's not too hard to extrapolate from that how graphics and a more approachable UI might change it. If you want a "demo" of the new iteration there's always cs.rin.ru of course.

My wife and I play pseudo-co-op, in which she and I share the experience of playing together, watching each other fail, sharing stories about failure, and advising each other on how to do things like break through aquifers or build complex machines. It's a better overall cooperative experience than in most building games which generally involve never-ending defense combat.

I checked out the reviews, and many like it a lot. But, its not my cup of tea.
I like builder games and all, but this one just isn't doing it for me.

I'm glad sales are going well for the brothers and I hope they are well rewarded.
Of course, if they lived in a civilized country, a cancer scare wouldn't have wiped one of them out financially.

Passion is good, however it is also good to be able to make enough money to survive and live a decent life.

Actually, they're very explicit that this particular version is for financial windfall. Not to get rich, but one of the brothers had a health scare that wiped out a bunch of their wealth, so this is to try to rebuild that and have something to fall back on if it happens again.
So they outsourced this, but to a company they felt would really be able to do it justice.

Hope this really pays off for them, they are definitely devs that do it for the passion, not the financial windfalls. Really enjoying the game so far. It needs some more polish, but it's exceeded my expectations so far.
