Overwatch 2 Season 2 Begins; Rank Explained [Dec 08, 2022, 12:30 pm ET] – Share – Viewing Comments
Blizzard announces that Season 2 is now underway in Overwatch 2, the
competitive shooter sequel. On a related note,
the
company tweets an explanation for players trying to understand how the
seasonal rollover affects rank in competitive play. This outlines new season
rank decay and how matches are still based on your secretive MMR even if you've
dropped rank. These mechanics have always seemed intentionally obtuse, but the
post acknowledges a need to be clearer going forward:
REGARDING START-OF-SEASON COMPETITIVE PLAY:
At the end of every season, your final rank will be based on any matches played since your last rank update. End-of-season competitive rewards are based on your final rank.
When a season begins, we apply some rank decay to all roles, and over the course of a season players should climb back to ranks that represent their true skill level. That being said, all match-made games will still be based on your underlying MMR, ensuring we're making matches as fair as possible.
We understand that we need to do a better job making these systems more understandable and will be addressing these issues and other parts of the system in the future.

The reward of competitive points (CP) has also changed. These are used to unlock gold weapons @ 3,000 each... there is no other way to accumulate or purchase these points: they are only awarded in Competitive mode after a win or tie, and Rank placement.
OW2 is only awarding the CP payout for your highest, single Rank placement, and not the highest rank within each queue. This cuts CP earnings by 75%.
I'm estimating that 40 hours of OW2 gameplay (during a 60 day season) is required to just obtain the CP payout from OW1, which took less than 4 hours.
