I don't recall really having this discussion before, but devil's advocate would imply I don't really believe what I'm saying. I do.

Diablo 3 wasn't really any different in tone than Diablo 2. If anything is different about the graphics it's just that they were limited in the past so you filled it on with your imagination, like the difference between Quake and Quake 2, or DOOM and Doom.

I always wonder if people that call D3 cartoony actually played D1 or D2.

Seriously. D2 has day-glo enemies and zones eventually. Neon everything.

D3 definitely had some art influence from WoW, but not THAT much, lol.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Diablo 4 with great anticipation. Of course it has controller support, even on PC, many players play with controllers now. I am a Keyboard +mouse purist of course, but we're literally a dying breed.

D3 didn't go full cartoony like the Torchlight series did, but it came fairly close. It definitely had that WoW style that I really dislike. You've got to admit that the previous games had a darker tone, not just in graphics style but in overall presentation, that was absent in D3.

I mean, one whole level was you walking on bodies several feet deep. That's pretty dark in tone. Did it use chunkier graphics that have been proven to scale well across a wide range of systems? Yes. But look like WoW? WoW is the game with cutsey pandas fighting ogres with mohawks. None of that was remotely close to Diablo 3. It was still dark.

Even at its worst, this is a monk in Diablo 3, and this or this or this are ones in WoW.

This still looks like Diablo to me. Blood everywhere, dark, loaded with mutilated bodies.

The only problem with this game is
Diablo IV is the first in the series to be genuinely tailor-made for console players and was developed with the controller in mind

I watched the footage in the IGN review. It seemed... "odd" maybe? It is distinctly different from what I remember from D3, but it has been awhile since I played it. I can't quantify it as better or worse, just different. The skill tree format looked like it could be interesting/cool -- but we won't really know until we have more information. I am still in "wait and see" mode for this.

Hit both issues I had with D3. I never bought it. It was far too cartoony, think Warcraft, with horrific server-side copy protection, and a silly "auction house." Can't digest Warcraft. Weirdly, none of these first-look articles mention any of those D3 issues. None of them mentions Diablo II Resurrected, while all of them raved about the original Diablo II...;)

This looks good so far, and I hope we will get good news on the other D3 issues, as well.
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

Diablo IV is amazing. You only have to spend $100k on microtransactions too fully unlock the power and fun of the game. What's not too love!!!

Oh look, shill previews! YAAAY!

Two things will ruin this game, very limited item trading between players. Which automatically means less player interaction, boring itemization, predictable drop rates and boring easily accessible builds. And second monetization/customization options. This will destroy any chance at proper PVP in this game, since you can make you character look any way you want there will be no way to know what the "other guy" is rocking until he fires off his first attack, making PVP less experience based and more like a crap shoot.

I suspect the story, worldbuilding and atmosphere might be a return to form for Blizzard though. So it has that going for it at least. D3 made me want to throw up in my mouth in that regard.

There are settings that manage that

Offline play? On PC? That's not possible. On console versions, yes I believe offline play is possible but not on PC.
I was coming back to report the same thing. Everything I find on playing D3 offline says No, except it's possible on Switch.
But no clue how or interest in, at least for me, since I have neither Switch or D3.

Wait... what? How did you get to play it 3 years ago? Were you working for Blizzard at the time?

Thanks Steele Johnson, I figured since there wasn't Single Player meant no modding which would normally remove nasty stuff.
I'll try to read up more on it, but hopefully there will be choices for D4 as well.
