Ubisoft Launches Fair Play Program

A post from Ubisoft explains its new Fair Play Program a new "platform" on Ubisoft Connect "designed to raise awareness on disruptive behaviors in the gaming community, help players recognize their own triggers, and how they can better understand the roots of those behaviors to overcome them." As that states, the idea is to educate players about how disruptive toxic behavior can be in multiplayer games, and how to recognize their own toxicity. There's a presumption that players are not aware of their own negative behavior, and it would be interesting to learn if that is accurate. Word is:
The modules are intended to help players understand situations that cause negative behaviors, the behaviors themselves, and the impact they have on other players. The Fair Play Program is designed to teach by example, rather than give an exact definition of toxic behaviors with no room for nuance. The videos will show instances of disruptive behavior that will help players think differently about their own interactions while playing, as well as tools players can use if they are exposed to disruptive behaviors.

Really, Ubisoft? The issue isn't that people aren't aware, it's that they lack basic compassion. They are fully aware that they're being dicks, they're fully aware that other people are suffering because of it, and they take joy in those facts.

Showing kindergarten playground filmstrips isn't the answer.

Absolute hypocrisy from Ubisoft. Too late. Getting a few hours ban or a days ban for griefing or abusing other players has little to no meaning. These people switch accounts or platforms and keep playing while the ones who have had their gaming experience ruined quit the game entirely.

No matter how much you try, all it takes is one guy at the end of the corporate pep-talk to say something intentionally toxic and it will always get a huge laugh. You can't beat human nature. And you can't tell people to be nice, you have to show them.

I applaud any effort to curb this shit, but I think the reason everything is terrible online is because there's no real role models in gaming. You don't see gamers on TV or in Movies generally. There's no gamer hero archetype for people to vibe with. Most gaming celebrities are just streamers, and they can be super toxic, and their chat loves it.
