Dwarf Fortress on Steam

Dwarf Fortress is now officially available on Steam, offering a new version of this intense survival simulation. The game has been in development for 20 years, and an alpha version launched in 2006. It famously featured ASCII graphics, but has now been updated with new artwork that uses these things called "pixels." The new look, which is still not what you'd call graphically intensive, can be seen in the Launch Trailer. Here's an explanation:
This new version brings a brand new pixel art tileset, a new helpful tutorial to onboard unfamiliar players, new soundtrack and sound effects, new user interface and navigable menus, and other quality of life additions to the legendary civilization management and construction game.

The game will launch with the Fortress and Legends game modes that longtime players are familiar with. We plan to add the Adventure and Arena modes to these versions of Dwarf Fortress very soon.

You can learn more and see Dwarf Fortress’ development roadmap here.

He's been working on it for 20 years. Calling it Early Access at this point wouldn't give much hope for it ever being completed...

It needs a lot of work. There is really no charm to the visuals (RimWorld is similar but has it's own charm and style to visuals, this really doesn't) and the audio (sound effects, music) is quite poor. The core game is still as complex and interesting as ever. Maybe this should have been released as an Early Access game so it would feel like it'll be improved a lot more. Anyway I also hope it gets a lot of dev and community support because the potential is certainly there.

Tried playing the old version multiple times, only to get totally flummoxed and frustrated. Glad to see it has graduated from the throw-up angry fruit salad presentation.

Won't be pulling the trigger on this one, unless it builds up a solid Steam Community and Workshop with guides that are not obtuse arcane diarrhea written by life long enthusiasts.

I'll definitely get it. Have been waiting long enough. Just not right now. Luckily I got out of the habit to buy games just to have them immediately. I am really absorbed by Bannerlord right now, even more so than by its predecessors, I don't know why and there are other games in the backlog so I'll probably get this during a sale. But I will because this game is awesome and it's getting really good reviews (though I think these are mostly veteran players and the established playerbase, who love the game anyway - gotta wait for some newbies who will have a more realistic outlook about how this version really is).
Now we donce.

Refunded it. Couldn't deal with the jumpy dwarf/creature movement. Repetitive game sounds quickly got on my nerves. Also there was no feedback sounds on using the menus.

The brothers should really consider hiring another person to polish that movement animation and maybe a sound artist or two. But hey, it's their life's work!

I did watch it. The graphics are passable. You can identify things. Reminds me of RimWorld, whose graphics I don't care for either. Listen, I'm not saying it is a bad game, just saying I have difficultly getting passed the graphics -- despite being someone who likes Minecraft and Cosmoteer, which certainly aren't known for their graphics. Is that illogical or make me a bad person? Maybe.

Still melting CPUs that's for sure

Love Rimworld. Have wanted to play DorfFort for years but I've been holding off on this release. And now that it released I'm underwater at work. sigh.

This looks like a game I could get lost in, or hate in the first 30 minutes. I think what is holding me back isn't the graphics, but the complete lack of animations. I can understand that it's a complex game, but is it THAT complex that they couldn't somehow figure out smooth movement for characters? I suppose it's simply replacing the ascii information with sprites, but oh boy, does that movement look terrible.

I bet that at some point somebody will come out with a mod that allows you to zoom down to fully animated 3-D characters and objects. And that will be the greatest thing ever

I like to think I'm not a graphics snob. I played thousands of hours of vanilla Minecraft, more recently I have played a ton of Cosmoteer. But the lack of graphics here is a real mental block. I mean, I know graphics rarely are what make a game worth playing, so maybe I can gather up some drive and give it a whirl eventually, but I'll very much have to be in a "mood" for it...

Everything in this game now has graphics..or you mean better graphics? Well yeah, you always need to be in the mood for diz imo Game can be as complex as you like, and imo it's better first try to just yolo it.

I picked it up. At some point will have to tackle the incredible complexity of this game.

Looks interesting, I've only played RimWorld as a similar style game, I know this dates back much further for the ascii based version but this is great. Added to Steam wishlist will look into it more.
